While Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is arguably the most highly anticipated release of the summer, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 3, the conclusion to Paul Atreides’ story, is just as eagerly awaited, if not more, especially after the reception to Dune 2. Although on the surface these two movies bear little resemblance, with one being a mythological epic rooted in ancient Greece and the other a sci-fi saga set thousands of years in the future, they, interestingly, aren’t entirely disconnected.
The connection stems from Agamemnon, who will star in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. Set to be played by Benny Safdie, Agamemnon, the Mycenae king who served as the leading commander of the Greek Forces at the Trojan War, is essential to the Dune lore, especially in the later books.
How does the House Atreides tie back to Homer’s Odyssey?
Technically, Homer’s Odyssey is indeed canon to Frank Herbert’s Dune, even though the latter doesn’t delve into any detailed plot points from the Greek epic. Agamemnon, the tragic king of Mycenae and a core figure in the epic, is depicted as an ancestor of the House Atreides. Interestingly, the House Atreides traces back to the mythic Greek lineage of the House of Atreus, named after Atreus, Agamemnon’s father.
Children of Dune directly addresses this noble heritage when Alia experiences one of her ancestral memories, which reads, “I, Agamemnon, your ancestor, demand audience!” God Emperor of Dune further explicitly highlights this connection in one of Leto II’s journal entries (via Dune Wiki):
My paternal grandfather was The Atreides, descendant of the House of Atreus and tracing his ancestry directly back to the Greek original.
So, in a literal timeline sense, Homer’s Odyssey can be seen as a prequel to Dune, which aligns well with the latter’s exploration of tragic heroism and mythic gravitas.
Will Dune 3 Confirm Paul’s Connection to Odyssey’s Agamemnon?

The Dune books are no strangers to real-world history and mythology, and with the excitement for The Odyssey at an all-time high, it raises questions about whether the third chapter in the saga will elaborate on Paul’s noble lineage.
Considering that Dune Messiah, the basis for the third Movie, does not delve deeply into House Atreides’ connection to Agamemnon and the Greek House of Atreus, a link that is explored more in the following books, it’s unlikely Villeneuve will incorporate those details into Dune 3.However, Messiah does reference real-world history, including Hitler and Genghis Khan’s evil deeds, in a rather blunt way, to make it clear to readers that Paul was indeed not a hero after the subtext was lost on many in the first book.
That said, Villeneuve has already laid strong groundwork for Paul’s descent in the previous movies, so omitting those off-putting references won’t take away much from the story.

The Odyssey is slated to release on July 17, 2026.
Dune 3 will release on December 18, 2026.
