Almost three decades ago, Practical Magic hit the screens to show two of the most famous actresses of their time, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, joining hands for the fantasy-comedy romantic book-based film. At the time, the critical reviews it garnered weren’t all that favorable, although the general audience didn’t seem to dislike it so much.
Now, almost 27 years after the release of the original, Kidman has come forward to reveal that the movie, which has since gained a cult following for its cast, soundtrack, and feminist themes, is about to get a sequel. Surprisingly enough, though, although it took so long to be made, this upcoming follow-up movie was actually planned way before!

In 1998, the entertainment industry delivered a storyline through Practical Magic that was so unique that, even though it garnered mixed reviews on its release, it garnered a massive cult following for numerous elements. But even before gaining such recognition, the flick planned its sequel.
At least that’s what Nicole Kidman had to confess recently, during the season 2 premiere of her Hulu series, Nine Perfect Strangers. Talking to Variety, she said about the sequel while talking about the original:
When we were making it, we definitely did. We’re so excited. Yes, yes, beyond excited. You heard our spell. We put out our spell already.

Not sure why it still took almost thirty years for the sequel to follow in the original’s footsteps, which is currently slated for a 2026 release. Notably enough, though, Kidman revealed to Variety in February that the follow-up movie was “moving ahead rapidly,” though, in her latest interview, she said about the shoot dates for the sequel, “Not for a while.”

As interesting as the prospect of having the sequel to Practical Magic hit the screens soon is, what’s even more intriguing is that both Sandra Bullock and Kidman are returning to reprise their iconic roles as the sisters and witches Sally and Gillian Owens. At the time of the first movie, the former was 34 and the latter was 31 when the film premiered.
Earlier this month, Warner Bros. took to social media to officially announce the release date of the movie through a text-only teaser that featured a voiceover from the two respective actresses as they chanted,
Tooth of wolf and morning dew. Something old and something new. Let the spell begin to mix. Sept. 18, 2026.

In the original movie, Sally and Gillian are two sisters and witches who must fight off a curse that kills the men they fall in love with using the gift of practical magic, which they inherited from their late parents to overcome obstacles in their lives. The movie was based on the titular 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman, and directed by Griffin Dunne.
The plot details for the second movie, though, are currently kept strictly under wraps. What’s known is that besides the actress’ return, this forthcoming movie will be directed by Susanne Bier from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first flick.
Practical Magic is set to hit the screens on September 18, 2026.
