Set in the 1860s, House of Guinness opens in the wake of Sir Benjamin Guinness’s death, the man responsible for transforming the Guinness brewery into an international powerhouse. His four adult children, Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben, inherit the empire and are forced to manage it together.

Before his passing, Sir Benjamin set up a joint stewardship between Arthur and Edward, forcing the two brothers to work together to maintain control of the business. This decision creates power struggles within the family as they each try to carve out their own place in the business world. Creator Steven Knight told Tudum,

It’s is the extraordinary story of a family who happens to be the inheritors of the biggest brewery in the world. They are young and are given the task of taking on this incredibly successful brand. The first priority is: Don’t screw it up. And the second priority is to make Guinness even bigger.

The show takes viewers through Dublin and New York, focusing on family drama with the history of one of the world’s most successful breweries.
