Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth celebrates its two-year anniversary today, and it’s a bit of a quirky one. Square Enix decided to release the game on February 29, 2024, and since leap years happen once every four years, we’ve celebrated the game’s anniversary in March twice now.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released 2 years ago today! It was actually released on a leap year day of February 29, 2024. So this is the closest we can get to the 2 year anniversary. One of the best games of this generation and I can’t wait for Part 3! pic.twitter.com/oEfZTptkb4— Genki✨ (@Genki_JPN) March 1, 2026
But while we continue praising what many consider one of the defining RPGs of this generation, the bigger question remains. Where is Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, and when will it come out? Well, we’ve gotten some recent news, and it might not be as far as we think.

According to series director Naoki Hamaguchi, development on Remake Part 3 is advancing without major setbacks. In a recent interview with Japanese outlet Automaton, he described production as going “very smoothly,” crediting the team’s long-term effort
The team behind the FFVII Remake series has been working together for over ten years, since day one of the very first project. Moreover, the core members have remained throughout, and I truly respect them for that. Building something together for more than a decade is not easy.
He also addressed one of the more controversial decisions about the third installment, which is the continued use of Unreal Engine 4 instead of upgrading to Unreal Engine 5. UE5 has some crazy features. We all know the advanced lighting and upgraded geometry systems, which have been used by newer games, but Hamaguchi explained that UE5 wouldn’t fit their timeline.
So even for the final installment of the trilogy, rather than rebuilding our pipeline from scratch in Unreal Engine 5, it’s far more efficient for us to use Unreal Engine 4, which we already have a well-established pipeline for.
When Rebirth entered production, Unreal Engine 5 was still in its early stages. So instead of risking delays or rebuilding their entire workflow, the team opted to continue with UE4. Square Enix already knows how to optimize UE4 and has experience carried over from the previous game. So the team believes it can push quality even further without sacrificing stability or scale.

When Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth came out in 2024, it had to meet some pretty high expectations. We all loved the first part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, so the hopes were high going into the next one. And boy did it deliver.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is Metacritic’s #1 game of the first half of 2024! 🔥 #FF7R– 92 Metacritic score after 149 reviews– 9.0 User score after over 4k reviewshttps://t.co/znZIIsKShg pic.twitter.com/Axv3Hf0dKD— Genki✨ (@Genki_JPN) July 2, 2024
Rebirth took the game and its story beyond Midgar into a huge open-world reinterpretation of the original game’s most iconic locations. We got to experience everything from the parade in Junon to the iconic scenes in Cosmo Canyon. It’s a scale we never expected from it, and that is exactly the point.
Square Enix wasn’t just giving us a shinier version of the original game. The additional storylines added so much character development, and it completely changed how we see and feel about characters like Yuffie. It completely changed our expectations for this Remake trilogy, and that’s why Part 3 has even more hype behind it.
For now, we still have no official release window for Remake Part 3, but it’s not hard to estimate a date based on what we know already. There was a 3-4 year gap between Remake (2020) and Rebirth (2024). And if we go with that idea, we could very well see an announcement for a 2027 release very soon.
What are you expecting from the final title in the Remake trilogy? Let us know in the comments!
