In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter universe, a wand isn’t just a tool; it is an extension of a wizard’s personality, skills, and magical destiny. As Ollivander reminds us in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, “The wand chooses the wizard.” Nowhere is this more evident than in the wands wielded by members of Gryffindor House.
Known for bravery, loyalty, and daring, Gryffindors tend to have wands that reflect bold cores, flexible designs, and powerful allegiances. But not all Gryffindor wands are created equal. While wands like Harry Potter’s iconic phoenix feather wand changed the fate of the wizarding world, others lacked any noticeable feature.
So, here, we will be looking at every notable Gryffindor wand in the Harry Potter books and movies, and rank them all according to their overall usefulness, from best to most useless!

1. Harry Potter’s Wand – Holly, Phoenix Feather, 11”
Arguably, the most famous wand in all of wizarding history, Harry Potter’s holly and phoenix feather wand, stands at the top. Crafted by Ollivander, its phoenix feather core came from Fawkes, Dumbledore’s phoenix.

Moreover, the wand shared a twin core with Lord Voldemort’s, leading to it showing us some extraordinary feats like the Priori Incantatem duel in Goblet of Fire. Proving extremely versatile in a range of spells and combat, the wand truly represents bravery, loyalty, and a destiny tied to both light and dark.
Having shaped the outcome of the Second Wizarding War, few wands carry that much narrative weight.
2. Albus Dumbledore’s Wand – Elder Wand

While technically not his original wand, Gryffindor alumnus Albus Dumbledore wielded the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand ever created. As one of the Deathly Hallows, it could master any spell created, even repair broken wands, and win nearly every duel.
Dumbledore’s control of the Elder Wand also allowed him to outmatch Voldemort and perform magic that even seasoned wizards have difficulty performing. Even though it wasn’t his chosen wand, its legendary strength and history make it impossible to ignore in this ranking.
3. Hermione Granger’s Wand – Vine Wood, Dragon Heartstring, 10 ¾”

If you are a true Potterhead, you know Hermione Granger’s wand will certainly be among the best in this list. Given Ollivander’s wand chooses the wizard philosophy, her wand is just as powerful as a witch she is. Vine wood is associated with intelligence and intuition, perfectly suiting the brightest witch of her age (via HarryPotter.com). Its dragon heartstring core gave it immense power, though it required careful handling.

Throughout the movies and books, we see this perform some of the most complex magic, intricate charms to complex Transfiguration, and the Patronus Charm. Hermione’s skill made her wand one of Gryffindor’s most dependable magical tools as well. While it may not be as legendary as Harry’s or Dumbledore’s, it certainly is one of the most efficient wands in the entire fandom.
4. Minerva McGonagall’s Wand – Fir, Dragon Heartstring, 9 ½”

Professor McGonagall’s wand was just as firm and resilient as she was. Fir wood is associated with strong will and loyalty, and dragon heartstring is known for providing raw magical strength.
Throughout the franchise, her wand showcased some of the best Transfiguration in the series: animagus transformations, protective enchantments over Hogwarts, and even battle spells against Death Eaters. In Deathly Hallows, we see how vital her wand magic was in fortifying the castle during Voldemort’s attack.
Known for its pure power and loyalty, along with McGonagall’s prowess as a witch, this wand is one of the best of Gryffindor wands.
5. Ron Weasley’s Wands – First (Ash, Unicorn Hair, 12”) & Second (Willow, Unicorn Hair, 14”)

Ron Weasley initially got his brother, Charlie’s, old wand, which ended up being broken in the Chamber of Secrets. Useless in duels and prone to backfiring, it was one of Gryffindor’s most comically unreliable wands.

However, his second wand was a different story entirely, which is why it occupies this place in the list. Made with Willow wood and a unicorn hair core, it served him well in the latter books and movies. Even the wand that he took from Peter Pettigrew in Deathly Hallows served him well.
6. Ginny Weasley’s Wand – Yew wood, likely Dragon Heartstring core, length unknown
Ginny is one of those characters whose wand specifications were never revealed by Rowling. Still, given the feats the wand accomplished, it is one of the best ones ever. Strong and effective, it helped the youngest Weasley to showcase her talent, whether it be fighting alongside the Golden Trio in the Ministry of Magic or performing the Bat-Bogey Hex.
Her wand helped her hold her own in Dumbledore’s Army and the Battle of Hogwarts. Though less famous than her brother’s or Harry’s, Ginny’s wand was far from useless. Given that we lack specific details about what they want, it prevents it from ranking higher. However, her skills suggest that the wand is worthy of a great deal of respect.
7. Neville Longbottom’s Wand(s) – First (Broken) & Second (Cherry, Unicorn Hair, 13”)

Just like his friend Ron, Neville Longbottom also got a hand-me-down wand. His first wand is of unknown origins and belonged to his father. However, its journey was short-lived as it was broken by a Death Eater during the battle at the Department of Mysteries.

But his second wand was made of cherry and unicorn hair, having a length of about 13 inches. Manufactured by Ollivander, with it, Neville was able to become one of Hogwarts’ bravest and fiercest of defenders. Not only did he fight valiantly against the Death Eaters before and during the Battle of Hogwarts, but from what we know, it served him well. This is why Neville’s wand occupies a higher place on this list.
8. Sirius Black – Wand Details Unknown

Though Rowling never revealed the exact details of Sirius Black’s wand, its wood, core, or length, we do know enough about his character and magical style. Moreover, he possibly used a different wand during the First Wizarding War and later had a different wand following his escape from Azkaban.
A rebel and a fierce Gryffindor who specialized in powerful offensive magic, his wand reflected his fiery personality. We see how accomplished he is while dwelling with several Death Eaters at once at the Department of Mysteries. However, unfortunately, his life was cut short before we could have seen his feats.
9. Remus Lupin – Cypress, 10¼”, Unicorn Hair core

One of the most powerful wands to have been featured in the movies or books, Remus Lupin’s wand was made of Cypress with a Unicorn Hair wand core. As one of the most skilled Defense Against the Dark Arts professors Hogwarts ever had, Lupin demonstrated mastery of defensive spells, particularly the Patronus Charm.

His wand symbolizes intellect and restraint. While he lacked the brute force of Sirius or the fiery defiance of James, his wand-work showed wisdom and compassion.
10. Fred & George Weasley’s Wands – Unknown

The details about the twins’ wands remain unknown, but given their inventive use of magic, their wands must have been powerful in their own might. From the exemplary and wide-ranging magic they used, we can make out that they were super flexible, creative, and powerful.
From helping them make genius inventions to defend Hogwarts, their wants are some of the most powerful ones in the lore.
11. James Potter – Mahogany, unknown (Dragon Heartstring?) core, 11″

We know very little about James Potter’s wand beyond the fact that it was powerful enough to make him an Animagus and a skilled duelist. Given his reputation as one of the strongest Order members and a direct adversary of Voldemort, his wand likely had a strong core (possibly dragon heartstring or phoenix feather).

While it was certainly powerful from what we know, the lack of details keeps us from ranking it higher on this list.
12. Lily Potter – Willow, Unknown Core, 10 ¼”

Lily Potter was all about grace and skill. While the details of her wand are pretty scarce, willow wood is tied to healing. Though her time in the lore was short, we know she was a gifted witch, and her wand reflected kindness and magical ability. However, it was also a powerful wand given that she was a fierce member of the Order of Phoenix who had already defeated the dark forces of Lord Voldemort.
Yet, the wand is more symbolic than it is powerful or showy, which is why we are forced to rank it pretty low on this list.
13. Peter Pettigrew – 9 ¼ Inches, Chestnut, Dragon Heartstring

Unlike Sirius and Lupin, Peter Pettigrew’s wand is explicitly described in canon: chestnut wood with a dragon heartstring core. Interestingly, this wand suited him in strange ways. Dragon heartstring is known for producing powerful magic, but it bonds strongly with its master.

While his cowardly nature often made him rely on strong and powerful wizards, his wand failed to grant him dangerous abilities when needed. Having never shown much affinity with the wand, it seems like it was power wasted in weak hands.
14. Seamus Finnigan – Unknown

Seamus was notorious for blowing things up unintentionally. While this may have been his own magical mishaps rather than the wand itself, his wand didn’t exactly inspire confidence. Even though we saw him battle later in the Second Wizarding War, his wand remains largely uninteresting and more like a comic relief.
Wands of Other Gryffindor Members

While we have ranked 14 of the Gryffindor wands we know of in the list, based on the best to the most useless, several other characters have not been included in the list. Characters like Parvati Patil, Lavender Brown, Dean Thomas, Colin Creevy, Cormac McLaggen, Romilda Vane, Katie Bell, Percy Weasley, etc, have not been mentioned due to a lack of details or lack of any powerful feats.
Moreover, other characters like Arthur Weasley, Molly Weasley, Charlie Weasley, Rubeus Hagrid, and more have not been mentioned in the list because of a lack of details, but also because of how they deserve a special mention for how skilled they were and the extraordinary magic they performed throughout the story.
From Harry’s phoenix feather wand to Seamus’s accident-prone tool, Gryffindor wands reflect the diversity of their wielders. Some are legendary weapons of war, others comedic props, but all are bound by courage, the unifying trait of Gryffindor House.
