Even Horror Icon Stephen King Couldn’t Escape Wife’s Threat: Marriage Nearly Ended Over 1 Crazy Reason

Stephen King’s wife, Tabitha King, was driven crazy by the It author’s constant replaying of one iconic song. Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, King spoke about the song Mambo No. 5 by Lou Bega that nearly ended his marriage:

My wife threatened to divorce me. I played that a lot. I had the dance mix. I loved those extended play things, and I played both sides of it. And one of them was just total instrumental. And I played that thing until my wife just said, “One more time, and I’m going to f*cking leave you.”

Thankfully, the message was received loud and clear. Stephen and Tabitha King have now been together for over 52 years, with three children.

Stephen and Tabitha met as students at the University of Maine, where they both worked at the library (via People). After the two married in 1971, he began work as an English teacher, and she worked a second shift at Dunkin’ Donuts so that he would have evenings to write. Tabitha King’s belief in the author never ended, with Stephen King stating:

She’d read my stuff and felt certain I’d someday support us by writing full-time. She never made a big deal of this. It was just a fact of our lives. We lived in a trailer and she made a writing space for me in the tiny laundry room with a desk and her Olivetti portable between the washer and dryer.

“Tabby,” as he affectionately calls her, saved King’s manuscripts from the dustbin and egged him to finish his books.

Both Stephen and Tabitha are accomplished authors, with Stephen King having sold hundreds of millions of books, while she has published poetry and eight novels, including Small World and Pearl, and openly acknowledges that his fame helped her publishing career after years spent supporting his.

Stephen King’s Music Choice Is as Diverse as It Gets

In the Rolling Stone interview, King elaborated on his choice of music while writing his books:

…when I write, there are things that I can listen to a lot. And a lot of it is techno stuff or disco stuff, but techno in particular, there’s this group called LCD Soundsystem, and I love that. Fat Boy Slim is somebody else… with some of the techno stuff, or KC and the Sunshine Band, Gloria Gaynor, it’s all good.

Far Out Magazine reported Stephen King’s favourite songs, some of which include:

Finishing on the highest note, King spoke about his constant arguments with rock purists, not worrying about his taste:

I thought to myself, if people hate me and if they want to downgrade my musical taste, I’ll just have to live with that and cry hot tears of shame on my pillow. If I had more time here, I’d have put on one of the Bee Gees disco songs, but that’s another story.

Stephen King’s lifelong love of music and his wife prove his everlasting passion and love for humanity. Fortunately, he learnt his lesson and didn’t loop music once again to drive her nuts, leaving the music for the screens.

What do you think of the crazy reason?
