Nigerian rapper Erigga has shared his thoughts on what he believes is a major reason genuine love no longer thrives in modern relationships, the influence of internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys.
Speaking during an interview on Yanga FM Lagos, the Warri-born rapper said the extravagant spending habits of these fraudsters have set unrealistic standards for relationships, making romance feel more transactional than emotional.
“Yahoo boys don kill romance,” Erigga said frankly. “When last did you see two lovers holding hands in the street? It’s been a long time. We’re raising weak men who think their worth is only measured by how much they have.”
He reminisced about simpler times when dating was affordable and based on genuine affection. According to him, there was a time when a simple outing with meat pie and a bottle of Fanta could bring joy to a relationship. “Back then, women appreciated little things,” he said. “Now, everything is about money, and men helped create that problem by trying too hard to impress.”
Erigga emphasized that love and relationships should not be based on wealth alone but on emotional connection and shared values. He encouraged men to build relationships on understanding, humor, and communication, while also urging women to appreciate sincerity over material gifts.
“Love no be by money alone,” he concluded. “Emotional intelligence and true communication are what really keep people connected.”
