Did This Harry Potter Actor Use Magic to Land the Role of Hagrid? The Answer Might Shock You

The new Hagrid might have actually tried a little magic to land the role. And yes, you read that right. Nick Frost has admitted that before he was cast in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, he attempted to manifest his way into the wizarding world, turning a simple suggestion from his partner into something that sounds suspiciously like a spell.

Instead of a wand or an incantation, Frost relied on repetition, belief, and a marathon rewatch of the films, transforming the Christmas season into a quiet act of intention. The story comes straight from the actor himself, shared during a recent reader Q&A for The Guardian. He said:

Before I was cast as Hagrid, my partner suggested trying to manifest it. So last Christmas, I watched all the films back to back on the Sky Harry Potter channel, while writing out the word ‘Hagrid’ 7,000 times.

Known for balancing comedy with unexpected warmth, Frost is now preparing to step into one of the most emotionally significant roles in the Harry Potter universe.

Harry Potter‘s New Hagrid Faces Unavoidable Expectations

For many fans, Hagrid is the emotional center of Harry Potter. He’s the character who makes the wizarding world feel safe before it ever feels magical. And for an entire generation, that feeling is inseparable from Robbie Coltrane: his voice, his softness, and the way Hagrid always seemed a little unsure of himself but endlessly kind.

That’s the reality Frost is stepping into. Not a blank role, not a fresh start, but a character fans already know in their bones. Every scene will be watched through memory. Every choice will be compared, even subconsciously, to a version people have carried with them for years.

And the expectations aren’t simple. Some fans want Hagrid to feel exactly the same, like no time has passed at all. Others want something new, but only within very narrow limits. Too familiar, and it feels like an imitation. Too different, and it risks breaking the spell entirely.

That’s what makes this role so difficult. Hagrid isn’t just beloved. He’s also protected. And no matter how Frost approaches the character, the expectations never change. They were already waiting for him.

Seeing a New Hagrid Was Bittersweet for Chris Columbus

For Chris Columbus, Hagrid isn’t just another character from Harry Potter. He’s one of the first faces audiences ever met when the wizarding world came to life on screen. As the director of the first two films, Columbus worked closely with Coltrane to shape a version of Hagrid that many fans still consider the definitive Hagrid.

So when photos from HBO’s upcoming series began circulating, showing Frost in a costume almost identical to the original, the moment hit harder than Columbus expected. The look was familiar in a way that immediately pulled him back to the early days of the films.

Speaking on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast in August, Columbus admitted the resemblance stood out right away.

It’s very flattering for me, because I’m like, that’s exactly the Hagrid costume that we designed. So, part of it is really exciting, so I’m excited to see what they’re going to do with it. Part of it is sort of deja vu all over again.

He didn’t keep that reaction to himself. Columbus said he shared it directly with Frost, explaining why seeing Hagrid again felt so personal.

Speaking to The Standard, he recalled:

I said, ‘This is very surreal for me… You have to understand, Robbie Coltrane and I were so close.’ So it’s just weird, bizarre.

Coltrane played Hagrid across all eight films and became inseparable from the character. He died in 2022 at the age of 72, which makes Hagrid’s return, especially in such a familiar form, feel both comforting and unsettling for fans and filmmakers alike.
