Danny Seagren has passed away at the age of 81 on November 10 (via Variety). Known for a stint as a Puppeteer on Sesame Street, Seagren was also notable for playing the first live-action Spider-Man in the TV Show, The Electric Company. The details regarding his death, as of writing, remain under wraps.
His stint as Spider-Man lasted nearly three years, and Seagren was pretty open about enjoying his stint as the webhead, despite its campiness, which can be attributed to most superhero productions from that era.
Danny Seagren Embraced His Spider-Man Legacy
Although superheroes weren’t exactly a hot commodity at the time, this didn’t stop Seagren from embracing the role, even in his later years. When once posed with the question of whether he felt silly in the role, the actor clarified that he enjoyed the process and was only focused on being a superhero (via 13th Dimension).
Moreover, in order to secure the role in the first place, he resorted to jumping from the filing cabinet when the producer entered and ended up landing on his desk. Even though his depiction of the character became overshadowed by the big three of the 21st century, comprising Maguire, Garfield and Holland, Seagren enjoyed visiting comic cons and meeting adults who grew up watching him on TV.
In his later years, he enjoyed appearing at Comic Cons, meeting the grown ‘kids’ who adored him! Danny will be greatly missed by his family, friends and those throughout the community he loved living in. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Even in an era where superheroes have become much more grounded and serious, his depiction of the webhead remains special to the millions whose childhood he helped brighten. Seagren is survived by his longtime companion Kate Vereau, his brother Dr Stephen L. Seagren, his sister-in-law Jill R. Seagren, and his nephew Sean G. Seagren.
