Part of the fun of the Absolute Universe has been seeing how classic characters are changed for the new dark setting. This has resulted in some characters that are normally heroes being transformed into villains. Such is the case with one new enemy of Absolute Wonder Woman, who was one of DC‘s first superheroes in the main DC Universe.
Written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Hayden Sherman, Absolute Wonder Woman #18 continues Diana’s battle with an army of magic users. This includes this world’s version of Zatanna, and a mysterious burning skeleton. It was this skeleton, who wielded blood magic, who destroyed Diana’s magical arm in the previous issue’s finale. It was also revealed that he used the same backwards-talking magic as Zatanna.

Diana made a tactical retreat, only to be followed back to her base by Zatanna. To Diana’s surprise, the rival witch reversed the binding she had placed on her to block her magic. However, Diana did not stop to wonder why she did so and pressed the attack.
Who is the new Absolute Wonder Woman enemy?
After a brief struggle, the two were finally able to talk peacefully. While still angry, Diana realized her wards would keep Zatanna out of her home if she had hostile intent. Zatanna apologized for binding Diana, but explained she was trying to end the fight quickly. She also explained that she recognized the burning man as her father; Giovanni “John” Zatara.

While best known today to comic readers as Zatanna’s father, Zatara has a long history at DC Comics. He first appeared in 1938’s Action Comics #1, which was the same comic that introduced Superman to the world. Zatara is likewise recognized as DC’s first magical superhero. Like his daughter, Zatara was a true mage who posed as a simple stage conjurer while using his powers to protect Earth from demons and dark magic users.
Zatanna believes that her father was, like her, under the control of Veronica Cale. She refused to help Diana fight him, but promised she would also not get in her way. Diana likewise swore to spare Zatara’s life if she could. The issue ends with battle imminent between Absolute Wonder Woman and Zatara and it still unclear if he is a willing servant of Cale’s agenda or enthralled.
