Avengers: Doomsday will not be lacking in past and present Captain Americas, and the latest update on the highly anticipated superhero crossover event is good news for fans of the Sam Wilson incarnation.
Anthony Mackie was one of the first names confirmed by Marvel Studios for Avengers: Doomsday, with the actor set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson, the former Falcon who has been Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the 2021 finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Sam took over the mantle of Captain America from Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, who later took on the identity of U.S. Agent. Walker will also appear in Doomsday as part of the New Avengers. Before Walker, Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers was the first, and longest-serving, Captain America, having been active as the superhero from World War II up to 2023, when he retired.
MCU fans did not expect to see Steve Rogers again in the MCU after Avengers: Endgame. However, to the surprise of many, Marvel confirmed Evans’ return to the shared universe as Steve Rogers in December 2025 with the first teaser trailer for Doomsday.
Steve Rogers is set to have a “central role” in Doomsday, with a reported plotline seeing him on a mission with Thor to find Loki. Some fans have expressed worry that the returning Avenger may overshadow Sam Wilson/Captain America.
Sam Wilson’s Captain America will still have a large role in Avengers: Doomsday despite Steve Rogers’ return
Luckily, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Trusted scooper MyTimeToShineHello is reporting that “Sam still has a decent role in Avengers Doomsday as he leads his own team of Avengers.”
The lineup for this version of Avengers is unconfirmed at this time, although fans expect it to include the new Falcon, Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and Shuri/Black Panther (Letitia Wright), all of whom are confirmed to appear in Doomsday.

While plot details remain under wraps, Doomsday is believed to center around the Avengers and New Avengers teaming up with the Fantastic Four and X-Men to stop Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom from taking over the multiverse.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU.
