Having gained worldwide acclaim through the Evil Dead movies, Bruce Campbell’s decision to move away from the franchise baffled several fans. However, the Hollywood veteran has now clarified his choice to curtail his involvement in the film series that arguably earned him fame, stating that the new-age creative process and increased studio participation prompted him to take this step.

Bruce Campbell left Evil Dead films to focus on Ernie & Emma

During a recent conversation on Zoom, the Burn Notice star revealed that he settled upon reducing his involvement in the Evil Dead movies following a meeting about the upcoming Burn film. The discussion seemingly convinced him to shift focus towards his indie comedy feature, Ernie & Emma.

“We had a meeting a couple of years ago, and the French director [Sébastien Vanicek] of Evil Dead Burn was there to experience his first script development meeting,” Bruce Campbell noted, as per Forbes. “He turned in a 10-page treatment to say, ‘Here’s my rough idea. Here’s what I’m thinking, A to Z’ and I think he got 20 pages of notes back.”

The 67-year-old actor further explained, “That’s when I said to myself. ‘You guys got this. I think you guys got this.’ I got tired of arguing points with someone who’s 26 years old about story and structure, and all that sort of stuff, and what matters and what doesn’t matter. So, I just found out it’s way better to just step back.”

Additionally, Campbell has publicly stated that talking to studio executives while developing a feature is one of the “processes that I don’t care for as a filmmaker.”

Having led the first three Evil Dead movies as the franchise protagonist, Bruce Campbell returned for the 2013 reboot as one of its producers and in a cameo. He also appeared in the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead. The actor/writer then served as the executive producer in 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, before reprising the role for the forthcoming Evil Dead Burn.

Despite his apparent retreat from the Evil Dead films, Campbell has reaffirmed that he will still support franchise mainstays Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. “I’m partners with the guys. Nothing else has changed,” he exclaimed.

Helmed by Sébastien Vaniček, Evil Dead Burn will arrive in theaters on July 24, 2026.
