Beyond being the flagship character of Marvel Comics, Spider-Man is one of the definitive classic superheroes. However, it took time for Hollywood to bring the Wall-Crawling Web-Head to life. Despite having headlined many movies, all of them have been made within the past 25 years. All of them have also been amazing and spectacular, but which of them is the best?

What are the best Spider-Man movies as of 2026?

There have been several series of Spider-Man movies and Spider-Fans get passionate about their favorites. Thankfully, solid cases can be made for all of them. With that in mind, the following chronological list tries to pick the best of the best from each era.

Spider-Man (2002)

“Who am I? You sure you want to know? The story of my life is not for the faint of heart. If somebody told you it was a happy tale… if somebody said I was just your average guy, not a care in the world… somebody lied.”

With those words, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) brings us into his double-life as Spider-Man. We see how he gained powers after being bitten by a genetically-altered spider. We see his first hard lessons as a hero and how “with great power comes great responsibility.”

This was the film which set the standard, not only for future Spider-Man movies, but superhero movies in general. The story sticks close to the classic Stan Lee and Steve Ditko origin. Indeed, the only major changes are Peter’s webs being organic and his knowing Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osborn in high school.

Director Sam Raimi was a big fan of Silver Age Spider-Man comics and this movie makes that apparent. There are lots of nods to the source material, particularly in The Daily Bugle scenes. J.K. Simmons is rightly praised for how he perfectly brought J. Jonah Jameson to life. Yet Elizabeth Banks, who played assistant Betty Brant, gets in a few brief but good moments as well. (Betty, it might be noted was Peter’s first love interest before MJ or even Gwen Stacy.) The movie, much like the comics, is a perfect blend of action, romance, and comedy.

Admittedly, some of the special effects have not aged well. Other elements, like the Missy Elliot cameo, instantly date the movie as a product of the early 21st century. However, the 2002 Spider-Man movie is still notable for capturing the heart of the character and being a solid introduction to the Wall-Crawler.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Spider-Man 2 picks up a few years after the 2002 original. Peter Parker is still trying to balance work, class, science, and superheroism with mixed success. However, he starts to think maybe he can have it all after meeting Dr. Otto Octavius. The brilliant scientist has the work and love life Peter has only dreamed of having for himself. Of course, Peter still has his powers to consider.

When Peter start losing his spider powers, he thinks maybe this is a sign. Unfortunately, Mary Jane has moved on and gotten engaged. (To add insult to injury, it is J. Jonah Jameson’s heroic astronaut son.) Also, the experiment that killed Otto’s wife, coupled with a malfunctioning AI, turns the once respected scientist into a murderous maniac. This conflict leaves Spider-Man once again struggling with issues of identity and responsibility.

With Spider-Man 2, Sam Raimi took everything that made the first movie work and built upon it. The movie has invited comparison to the equally beloved Superman II in how it handled the idea of a superhero losing his powers and seeking love until a new threat emerges. That threat, Doctor Octopus, is played with perfect pathos by Alfred Molina.

Another notable improvement is the film giving Kirsten Dunst more to do as Mary Jane. Granted, she is still a damsel in distress for most of the movie, but she does tell-off Peter for his thoughtless behavior. This is the spitfire from the comics we didn’t get in the first movie. She also gets a great moment at the end, when she asks Peter “Isn’t it time someone saved your life?”

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

With the classic origin of Spider-Man definitely interpreted by the first Sam Raimi movie, 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man went in a different direction. The movie still drew off the classic lore of the comics, referencing the mysterious deaths of Peter Parker’s parents. However, it also attempted to tighten the mythology, making Dr. Curt Connors an Oscorp employee before his transformation into The Lizard. The sequel would make similar efforts to tie other villains to Oscorp, so as to eliminate the number of random accidents spawning supervillains.

The main reason The Amazing Spider-Man is so fondly remembered is Andrew Garfield’s performance as the Wall-Crawler. Some have argued that while Tobey Maguire did a better job capturing Peter’s angst, Garfield nailed the comedic side of Spider-Man. Certainly the script gives Spidey a lot more quips in the fight scenes than in the Raimi films.

Another reason The Amazing Spider-Man films have a following is a stronger romance and romantic lead. While bearing little resemblance to the good girl Gwen Stacy from the comics, Emma Stone’s variant was an engaging heroine. She also had amazing chemistry with Andrew Garfiield, which sizzled on the screen. Small wonder then that fans are still hoping to see her as Spider-Gwen in a future MCU production.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

When Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) gets bitten by a radioactive spider, his life starts to change in seriously freaky ways. He begins developing powers like those of the Spider-Man of his world, a masked hero his police officer father doesn’t like. Things get even weirder when that Spider-Man dies and Miles starts meeting the spider-powered heroes of alternate universes. Together, they will stop a threat that endangers all reality and prove to the nervous Miles that “anyone can wear the mask.”

If ranked on critical and popular acclaim, Into the Spider-Verse would easily top a list of best Spider-Man movies. The film earned an amazing 97% rating with professional critics on Rotten Tomatoes, It did only slightly less well with audiences, meriting a 93% rating.

This 2018 animated film is as full of heart, humor, and heroism as any good Spider-Man comic. It is also distinctive and memorable, with a visually jarring mix of animation styles. Small wonder then that it won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

The MCU Spider-Man movies are generally agreed to be the pinnacle of Spidey’s cinematic adventures. From his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, many considered Tom Holland to be the best live-action actor to handle the Wall-Crawling Web-Head. With that being said, Spider-Man: No Way Home is notable as a love letter to the history of Spider-Man movies.

The movie opens with Peter Parker outed to the world as a superhero. He seeks the help of Doctor Strange in working a spell that will erase all memory of Spider-Man’s secret identity. Unfortunately, something goes wrong, and reality fractures as several sinister supervillains who know Peter Parker is Spider-Man start appearing in the MCU. Thankfully, Peter doesn’t face these threats alone, as some amazing friends stand by his side in the ultimate battle.

The only real flaw to No Way Home is one that has plagued most modern MCU movies. It’s all but impossible to just enjoy one MCU production now. You have to have seen the shows and movies leading into it. This is particularly true with all the villains from earlier franchise films appearing in this movie. However, for long-term Spider-Fans, this movie is a nostalgic look back at some of the greatest cinematic superhero stories ever told.

How we picked the best Spider-Man movies

With over two decades of Spider-Man movies, narrowing down the best of them to a mere top five list might feel like we’ve left a few hanging (no pun intended). To that end, we did try to highlight one movie from every series featuring Ol’ Web-Head. Consideration was also given to historical significance, awards won, and how well it captured the comics.
