Kane Parsons’ horror debut, Backrooms, appears to be on a generational box office run. The film, based on his own YouTube short films, which were themselves inspired by a creepypasta, has become a runaway hit despite its budget of under $10 million. It is backed by A24 and co-produced by Shawn Levy and James Wan.
The film has earned $195.9 million at the box office (via The Numbers). It has reportedly become the highest-grossing A24 film, surpassing the collections of previous contender Marty Supreme. The internet-born horror drama reportedly achieved this feat in only 11 days, despite competition from other horror films like Obsession.
The 20-year-old Parsons became the youngest director to reach number one at the Hollywood box office. The film had already broken A24’s domestic box office record, which was also held by Marty Supreme. The Timothée Chalamet starrer reportedly took 53 days to dethrone A24’s previous highest-grosser, Everything Everywhere All At Once.

From Paranormal Activity to Saw, plenty of horror movies have achieved seemingly impossible box office success on minimal budgets.
Now, with the success of Backrooms and Obsession, Hollywood has yet another lesson to learn from internet-born filmmakers. Both Kane Parsons and Curry Barker started out as YouTube creators before making their indie feature debuts. Barker is reportedly already working on his next film, Anything but Ghosts.
The success of these films, even with major titles like The Mandalorian and Grogu currently in theaters, signals something important about Hollywood’s future. Steven Spielberg, whose Disclosure Day is set to arrive in theaters this month, has already praised both filmmakers for their achievements.
