Michael Fassbender’s new South Korean sci-fi movie Hope has set a release date. The new film debuted at Cannes 2026 last month and received rave reviews from critics.

Hope’s official synopsis reads, “In the remote South Korea village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading.” Further, it continues, “What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.”

When is the release date for the Michael Fassbender sci-fi movie Hope?

Hope will be released in theaters on September 9, 2026, with Neon acquiring the North American distribution rights for the film. Its first teaser dazzled audiences when it dropped last month.

Early audience reactions at Cannes positioned Hope as one of the most anticipated Korean monster movies in recent history, receiving a seven-minute standing ovation. Fans will be able to see the praise for themselves when it releases later this year. Following its debut, the film sits at an impressive 82% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 reviews.

Instead of running from aliens, Hope sees Fassbender and Alicia Vikander play the extraterrestrials wreaking havoc. The movie is written and directed by Na Hong-jin, while its cinematography is handled by Hong Kyung-pyo, with an original score by Michael Abels. Besides Fassbender and Vikander, Hope features well-known Korean stars like Hwang Jung-Min, Zo In-Sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.

Hong-jin previously wrote and directed hits like The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing. He has also co-written 2021’s The Medium.
