DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has revealed which DC Universe movie fans should watch before seeing the upcoming Supergirl film. This comes ahead of the highly anticipated DCU movie’s theatrical release this Friday,
“When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice,” reads the official synopsis.
What does James Gunn want you to watch before seeing Supergirl?
Posted on Instagram, Gunn advised DC fans to rewatch 2025’s Superman movie in preparation for Supergirl’s long-awaited premiere. In addition, the filmmaker also shared a behind-the-scenes photo of David Corenswet and the Superman cast during the film’s promotional photoshoot. Corenswet is expected to reprise the Man of Steel in the upcoming DCU movie, reuniting him with House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. The latter also briefly appeared at the end of the hit 2025 film.

Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Ana Nogueira. The movie also stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, and Jason Momoa as Lobo. The movie is based on the DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. DC Studios heads Peter Safran and James Gunn are producing the film.
Executive producers are Nigel Gostelow, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars P. Winther. The creative team also includes director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer Neil Lamont, editor Tatiana S. Riegel, costume designers Anna B. Sheppard and Michael Mooney, Visual Effects Supervisor Geoffrey Baumann, music supervisor Susan Jacobs, and composer Claudia Sarne.
