The Odyssey will have two popcorn buckets to pick up for Christopher Nolan‘s new epic. While they are both fun and uniquely themed, they both have one major flaw.
Earlier this month, Universal Pictures unveiled the first popcorn bucket for the highly anticipated upcoming movie. Instead of something geared toward the movie, the popcorn bucket was none other than an Imax camera. Specifically, an Imax Keighley camera, something Nolan has praised recently as being crucial to the film’s production. The popcorn bucket sports a viewfinder, lens, and even a little side panel of controls.
Universal wasn’t done, though, as they announced yet another popcorn bucket this week. This time, fans hoping for a Greek mythology-themed bucket were rewarded, as Universal unveiled a Trojan Horse popcorn bucket. Much like Odysseus and his men, the popcorn for the bucket stows away inside of the horse, a funny nod to the upcoming movie.

The Odyssey’s popcorn buckets are cool, but not too practical
While both popcorn buckets are awesome in terms of collectibles to buy, they represent a larger problem with the “popcorn bucket” craze that has overtaken the world of movies. A large majority of the buckets unveiled nowadays are simply not practical for their intended purpose: eating popcorn. The Trojan Horse bucket, specifically, takes this to the extreme. Eating popcorn out of it seems like, to borrow another Greek myth, a Sisyphean effort.
The Imax camera seems much easier to eat out of, but also doesn’t seem very comfortable to hold onto while watching a movie. The problem with both, ultimately, is that both products seem much more geared to being something you can buy to display in the future, rather than an actual product made to enjoy a nice snack out of. When it’s viewed like that, it feels even worse, as you can surely just buy a nicer Trojan horse statue somewhere and not have to worry about jamming popcorn into it.
Ultimately, both popcorn buckets are fun and creative ideas for the upcoming movie. However, it would be nice to see companies try to make buckets actually serve their intended purpose more. The Odyssey’s buckets aren’t as egregious as the buckets that Masters of the Universe had, but still pretty rough.
