Nicolas Cage is opening up about his career, and that includes naming certain directors who might have had ‘hurt feelings’ because he rejected their movies. One of the prominent filmmakers he named was Christopher Nolan. Cage shared this piece of information when talking about his upcoming movie with David O. Russell, Madden. He shared that Russell came back to him, despite Cage turning down an offer from the director years ago.

He shared that most of the directors whom he had rejected previously got their feelings hurt and refused to call him back with another offer. He shared during an interview with The New York Times:

[David O. Russell] is the only director that I ever said no to who actually came back and offered me another movie. Most of them, they get their feelings hurt and don’t call you back. It’s happened a million times to me. It’s happened with Christopher Nolan, it’s happened with Woody Allen, it’s happened with Paul Thomas Anderson. They don’t call me back.

After he named Nolan as one of these directors, he went on to share that he had rejected a role in Nolan’s 2002 movie, Insomnia. Cage didn’t reveal the role he was offered, but the movie had a star-studded cast, including Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Martin Donovan, and Hilary Swank. It is likely that Cage was offered either the role of Pacino’s LAPD Detective Will Dormer, the protagonist, or Williams’ Walter Finch, the antagonist. The movie happened to be one of Nolan’s most underrated works.

Nicolas Cage Expressed Interest in Working With Nolan

Before Nicolas Cage made the interesting claim of hurting Christopher Nolan’s feelings, he publicly revealed his desire to work with the revered filmmaker. During the promotion of 2022’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, he appeared for a Reddit AMA session, where he revealed the projects he would choose to work on next. He was specifically asked about the directors he would like to work with.

The first name that he came up with was Nolan. He also named popular modern-day filmmakers and horror film stalwarts, Ari Aster and Robert Eggers. He also expressed interest in working with Spike Lee. Here’s what he wrote as an answer:

I would love to work with Christopher Nolan. I would love to work with Ari Aster. I would love to work with Robert Eggers. Spike Lee, too.

Cage’s interest and recent claim raise the question of whether Nolan purposefully avoids casting the actor. However, in Nolan’s defense, he tends to work with a select group of actors repeatedly. Matt Damon, who is leading his upcoming movie The Odyssey, is working with Nolan for the third time. Fans can only hope that Cage’s pleas reach Nolan and that the filmmaker cast him in his next movie after the current historical epic.

Nicolas Cage Names Other Directors Who Didn’t Call Him Back

It wasn’t just Christopher Nolan who allegedly had hurt feelings over Nicolas Cage’s rejection. The Spider-Noir actor, also named Woody Allen and Paul Thomas Anderson, alongside Nolan as well.

He shared that he and Anderson had previously discussed a short film starring Philip Baker Hall, but the collaboration never amounted to anything. He further revealed that this discussion with Anderson happened around the time his movie, Hard Eight, came out in 1996.

Cage did not reveal the details about the Woody Allen project that he had turned down. All three collaborations would have potentially brought out some uniquely stunning movies. Fans would love to see any of these movies happen now, especially with Nicolas Cage’s career on a path of resurgence.
