When it comes to measuring up the powerscaling from the Big 3 of the shonen anime genre, Bleach has some of the most broken and strongest characters among the trio. Not only do the characters reach a certain level of power, but they keep on growing to the point where it becomes almost absurd.
With that being said, a powerscaling ladder can easily be built for the series, since the manga has already finished and has given us a full picture of each character’s power. Here’s a ranking of the strongest characters from the Bleach anime and manga series.

Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains potential spoilers from the Bleach manga.
20. Yoruichi Shihoin
Yoruichi Shihouin from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Often called the “Flash Goddess” for her mastery of Shunpo, Yourichi Shihouin is arguably one of the best in the series – even captain-level fighters struggle to keep up with her speed. What pushed her power status in the series is her Shunko: Raijin Senkei and later Cat Goddess transformation during the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc.
What makes Yoruichi dangerous is her extreme speed and reflexes, her elite mastery of Hakuda, and her massive combat IQ. Her ability to pressure Askin, one of Yhwach’s elite guards, shows her caliber.
19. Byakuya Kuchiki
Byakuya Kuchiki from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
The 6th Division in the Gotei 13, Byakuya Kuchiki, is one of the most balanced fighters on this list – he holds a calm demeanor and a calculative mind, while still displaying his raw and almost unmatched powers in the series, especially after his Royal Palace training.
His upgraded Senbonzakura Kageyoshi became much deadlier after training with the Royal Guard; while it was already versatile and deadly to begin with, the training made it even more powerful. During the Gerard Valkyrie fight, Byakuya was fighting alongside monsters like Kenpachi Zaraki and Toshiro Hitsugaya without looking outclassed.
18. Toshiro Hitsugaya
Toshiro Hitsugaya from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Toshiro has one of the biggest endgame power jumps in the entire series – while he started as the “Child Prodigy” captain, the Thousand-Year Blood War revealed just how terrifying his full potential really is. His completed adult form of Daiguren Hyorinmaru pushed him into elite captain territory, allowing him to freeze massive objects nigh-instantaneously.
The most broken aspect of adult Toshiro is that anything frozen by him can lose its function entirely. Against Gerard Valkyrie, he was able to freeze even Gerard’s evolving body and powers temporarily; an absurd feat considering how broken The Miracle is.
17. Kisuke Urahara
Kisuke Urahara from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Arguably, the smartest and most versatile fighter in the entire franchise, Kisuke Urahara’s intellect, preparation, and absurdly flexible abilities make him one of the most dangerous characters in Bleach. Urahara has genius-level battle IQ and strategy, and a mastery of Kido that adds to his repertoire.
To top that, his Bankai, Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame, is unbelievably broken – it allows him to restructure anything within its range – heal damaged body parts, modify or destroy enemy bodies, and even reconstruct objects and the environment. During TYBW, Urahara was one of the few fighters capable of seriously threatening elite Sternritter like Askin Nakk Le Vaar.
16. Senjumaru Shutara
Senjumaru Shutara from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
While the manga didn’t expand on her much, the anime series elevated her to a whole new level of power scaling. Thanks to the anime, Senjumaru Shutara went from a mysterious Squad Zero member to one of the most terrifying beings in the franchise, including the reveal of her visually stunning Bankai – Shatatsu Karagara Shigarami no Tsuji.
Upon the release of her Bankai, it shook the Three Worlds, forcing Squad Zero to seal their powers normally to avoid destabilizing reality. Inside her Bankai, enemies are trapped in personalized fatal scenarios; escape becomes nearly impossible, overwhelming multiple elite Sternritter instantly.
15. Kenpachi Zaraki
Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Kenpachi Zaraki is the embodiment of raw combat power in Bleach – while many top-tier characters rely on hax, strategy, or reality-warping abilities, Kenpachi’s entire identity is built around overwhelming strength, instinct, and the love of battle.
What makes Kenpachi terrifying is his monstrous physical strength, near-unmatched durability, and constant growth during battle. His Shikai alone gave him absurd cutting power capable of slicing gigantic meteors apart, but then came his Bankai. His Bankai grants him a wild demonic transformation and power so extreme that his own body struggles to contain it.
14. Pernida Parnkgjas
Pernida Parnkgjas from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
As the Left Arm of the Soul King, Pernida is not just a Quincy – it’s a primordial entity tied directly to the foundation of the universe. It is, hands down, one of the most horrifying and underrated characters in the series, especially if we take a close look at its absurdly powerful abilities.
From continuous evolution during battle to nerve manipulation that can instantly destroy bodies, to near-immortality unless annihilated – these powers make him a force of nature. Just imagine: Kenpachi – who normally bulldozes enemies through brute force – was badly injured almost immediately after engaging Pernida directly.
13. Askin Nakk Le Vaar
Askin Nakk Le Vaar from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Unlike brute-force monsters such as Kenpachi Zaraki or Gerard Valkyrie, Askin Nakk Le Vaar wins through adaptation, poison mechanics, and battlefield control – while being one of the most deceptively broken characters in Bleach.
His Schrift, The Deathdealing, is ridiculously dangerous, allowing him to control the “lethal dosage” of substances like blood, oxygen, Reaitsu, poison, and even his opponent’s own spiritual energy. To top that, he has extremely high intelligence and battle IQ, and deadly area-control techniques like Gift Ball Deluxe.
12. Oetsu Nimaiya
Oetsu Nimaiya from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Oetsu Nimaiya is one of the hardest characters in the series to rank – he barely gets any substantial screentime, but what he does show is absurd. As the creator of every Zanpakuto and a member of Squad Zero, he operates at a level far above normal captains.
He showed ridiculous speed and reflexes, and elite swordsmanship, arguably among the best in the series. And we can’t really rule out the broken and ridiculously powerful sword Sayafushi, considered a failed creation by Nimaiya because its blade is too sharp and its edge is too smooth. Sayafushi’s excessive sharpness lets him cut through anything in his path.
11. Shunsui Kyoraku
Shunsui Kyoraku from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
The captain of the 1st Division and Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13, Shunsui Kyoraku, has one of the most powerful upscaling in the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc, especially with the reveal of his unique and devastatingly powerful Shikai and Bankai. His Shikai turns children’s games into essentially death games.
But his true threat is Katen Kyokotsu: Karamatsu Shinju, his Bankai that traps everyone nearby inside a tragic theatrical performance split into deadly “acts”. Lille Barro – one of Yhwach’s elite and broken soldiers and a nearly intangible divine being – was pushed to the brink of defeat by Shunsui.
10. Lille Barro
Lille Barro from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Lille Barro is arguably the most broken member of Yhwach’s Schutzstaffel in terms of pure hax – being the first Quincy to receive a Schrift directly from Yhwach, Lille was portrayed as something close to a divine executioner rather than a normal fighter. On top of that, Schrift, The X-Axis, ignores conventional durability entirely.
Once Lille opened both eyes completely, his attacks no longer “travel” – the target is pierced instantly along the line of fire; defensive abilities become nearly meaningless. Even Shunsui Kyoraku, one of the smartest and strongest captains, struggled immensely against him despite using one of the deadliest Bankai in the series.
9. Gerard Valkyrie
Gerard Valkyrie from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
As the Heart of the Soul King and one of Yhwach’s elite Schutzstaffel, Gerard feels less like a normal fighter and more like a natural disaster – his Schrift, The Miracle, is completely broken. What makes Gerard terrifying is that damage makes him stronger, constant size and power growth, near-limitless regeneration, massive reiatsu and physical strength, and the ability to survive seemingly fatal attacks repeatedly.
The core idea behind The Miracle is that hopeless situations become “miracles” for Gerard – the more desperate the battle becomes, the stronger he grows. Even after being cut apart by Kenpachi Zaraki, frozen by Toshiro Hitsugaya, and bombarded with Bankai attacks from Byakuya Kuchiki, Gerard kept evolving into stronger forms.
8. Jugram Haschwalth
Jugram Haschwalth from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
The Sternritter have exhibited some of the most broken abilities, not only in Bleach, but in all of shonen anime – and Jugram Haschwalth is no different. His Schrift, The Balance, is among the strongest hax abilities in the series – granting him the power to redirect misfortune away from Jugram and onto his opponents; damage, bad luck, and disadvantages suffered by him can effectively rebound back onto the enemy.
If that’s not enough to scare you, his Freund Schild amplifies this even further by absorbing misfortune before redistributing it. One of his biggest narrative advantages is his connection to The Almighty. While not on the same level as Yhwach’s full future manipulation, inheriting that power during Yhwach’s sleep still elevates him far above most Sternritter.
7. Uryu Ishida
While Uryu Ishida becomes massively underrated in power discussions because his abilities are less flashy, by the Thousand-Year Blood War, he quietly evolves into one of the most dangerous fighters in the series. His Schrift, Antithesis, is absolutely broken – allowing Uryu to reverse events between two designated targets.
Using his Schrift, Uryu can swap injuries, reverse battlefield conditions, turn fatal damage back onto opponents, and instantly change the outcome of exchanges. The scary part is that this ability bypasses conventional durability. Even overwhelmingly strong enemies can suddenly lose their advantage – Uryu can rewrite the result of what already happened.
6. Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
The previous Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13, Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto, is still widely considered the strongest pure Soul Reaper in Bleach history. For over a thousand years, he stood at the absolute peak of the Gotei 13 – as an authoritative figure that even his enemies feared.
His Zanpakuto, Ryujin Jakka, was already the strongest fire-type Zanpakuto; his Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, elevates that power to apocalyptic levels with four forms named after directions, each equally devastating. Even Yhwach considered him too dangerous to fight carelessly. The Quincy King relied on preparation, deception, and theft rather than direct domination.
5. Sosuke Aizen (Hogyoku Fusion)
Sosuke Aizen (Hogyoku Fusion) from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
During the Fake Karakura Town Arc, Sosuke Aizen transcended the normal limits of Soul Reapers and Hollows entirely after merging with the Hogyoku – evolving into something closer to a godlike existence. His new form showed constant evolution beyond his limits, near-immortality, and regeneration with the broken power to complete hypnosis through Kyoka Suigetsu.
At one point, his reiatsu became so immense that weaker beings could barely perceive him properly. Even after being sealed, Aizen remained powerful enough to influence the final battle against Yhwach, which says everything about how absurd he truly is.
4. Ichigo Kurosaki
Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Final Getsuga Tensho Ichigo, also known as Mugetsu Ichigo, is one of the most overwhelmingly powerful forms ever shown in the series. Ichigo Kurosaki achieved a transcendent state through the Final Getsuga Tensho, becoming so powerful that even Sosuke Aizen could barely comprehend him.
His Reiatsu transcended normal perception, and he gained extreme spiritual compression and control – he completely dominated the Hogyoku fused Sosuke Aizen. And if we are talking forms here, his Horn of Salvation form easily justifies his ranking here. Ichigo has always been an evolving character in the series, and his peak form is one of the strongest Bleach has ever witnessed.
3. Ichibe Hyosube
Ichibe Hyosube from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Ichibe Hyosube is one of the most conceptually overpowered characters in Bleach – as the leader of Squad Zero and the monk who “calls the true name of all things,” Ichibe doesn’t just attack opponents physically – he manipulates the very identity and meaning behind their existence.
What makes Ichibe terrifying is his control over names and power, reality-altering ink abilities, and massive spiritual pressure. Ichibe could literally erase names with black ink and rewrite identities entirely. Before Yhwach fully awakened the Almighty, Ichibe completely dominated the fight; very few characters in the series have controlled Yhwach that thoroughly.
2. Yhwach
Yhwach from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
Yhwach, after absorbing The Soul King, is widely considered the single most powerful active character ever seen in Bleach – he transcended the level of Soul Reapers, Quincies, Hollows, and even Squad Zero, becoming a cosmic-level entity capable of reshaping reality itself.
The Almighty’s future manipulation and Soul King-level cosmic power was a terrifying combination he possessed. However, the biggest reason he sits at or near the top of every ranking is The Almighty, a power that allows him to see countless futures simultaneously and alter those futures at will. He could rewrite events before they happen and nullify abilities he has already seen to the point of even resurrecting or avoiding death through future selection – he is basically the most broken character.
It took the combined efforts of Ichigo, Uryu, Aizen, and Haschwalth to defeat the overarching antagonist. Because he could see and alter all possible futures with the Almighty, the heroes had to coordinate a complex, multi-stage trap to neutralize him.
1. The Soul King
The Soul King from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot
The Soul King is less like a traditional character and more of a cosmic existence at the center of the Bleach universe – he sits at the very top of creation in the lore. What makes the Soul King so important is that he maintains the balance of all worlds and is the foundation of reality itself.
Even in his mutilated and sealed state, his body parts developed independent god-tier powers and beings like Gerard Valkyrie and Pernida Parnkgjas – this alone says a lot about the scale of his power. While some might argue that Yhwach displayed more of a power showcase than him, it is mindful to remember that the absorbed powers Yhwach showed are a lesser version of what The Soul King truly possessed.
