The WONDERfools Ending Explained: Is Ha Won-do Still Alive and What Happens to Chae-ni?

Netflix’s The WONDERfools ends exactly the way the series began, with notes of chaos in the midst of heartfelt moments. The quirky Y2K-era comedy already had a unique premise, but it evolves into a more poignant tale with a group of unlucky small-town misfits who gain superpowers. Interesting subplots involving government experiments, secret laboratories, trauma, and a battle to stop an entire city from mutating further add to the excitement of the story.

Set in Haeseong City during the final days of 1999, the K-drama centers around a group of unlikely heroes who develop strange powers after exposure to chemicals linked to the mysterious Wunderkinder Project. By the finale, the group finds themselves trying to stop scientist Ha Won-do from triggering a catastrophe that he believes will save the world.

But while the city survives, the ending leaves several major questions unanswered, including the truth behind Chae-ni’s powers, Un-jeong’s future, and Ha Won-do’s shocking final scene.

The Truth Behind the Child With the Eternal Heart

Years before the events of the series, Ha Won-do conducted illegal experiments on children in an attempt to create humans with supernatural abilities whom he named Wunderkinders. Among all the children subjected to the experiments, one boy stood out, who came to be known as the Child with the Eternal Heart. His body possessed the ability to revive itself after death.

That child eventually became connected to Un-jeong, who viewed him as his closest friend inside the lab. However, after an explosion destroyed the original facility, the boy was left brain-dead and suffering. His heart was later transplanted into Chae-ni, who had been born with a severe heart condition.

When Chae-ni learns that she survived because of someone else’s suffering, it completely changes how she sees herself. Instead of treating life recklessly, Chae-ni finally begins understanding the weight of the second chance she was given. The finale turns her from someone constantly running from death into someone determined to protect others with the life she now values properly.

What Were Ha Won-do’s Motivations?

Although Ha Won-do initially appears to be helping wealthy businessman Nam Sun-kyu achieve immortality, the finale reveals that his goals were not so innocent and far more notorious.

Won-do never truly cared about saving individuals. His obsession was recreating the Eternal Heart by any means necessary. He devotes his life to this quest, becoming convinced that mass mutation is the only path forward. Once he realizes Chae-ni carries the original Eternal Heart, he uses her blood to create a serum and begins experimenting again.

When Sun-kyu dies after receiving the serum, Won-do barely reacts. To him, failed lives are simply collateral damage in the pursuit of evolution. This scene shows how truly cold and uncaring he is, putting everything second to science and knowledge.

Won-do believes that if enough people are exposed, eventually another Eternal Heart will emerge naturally. To this extent, he transforms the chemical into air and plans to disseminate it across the city, making as many people affected with it as possible. He believes the mutation will take shape sooner or later, and he will fulfill his ultimate goal.

How Do Chae-ni and the Others Stop the Disaster?

The final battle unfolds during New Year’s Eve celebrations as the Church of Eternal Salvation manipulates the people of Haeseong City into gathering outdoors. This is so that they can come into contact with Won-do’s chemical and experience the mutation.

The finale ensues into full chaos as explosions, collapsing buildings, telekinesis, hallucinations, and malfunctioning powers all happen simultaneously. The group desperately tries to prevent the city-wide catastrophe, but it proves to be much more difficult than any of them had envisioned.

Eventually, the heroes discover that the church’s blimp contains the aerosolized chemicals that would mutate everyone below once detonated. Finally, a chance to show their heroic spirit, Chae-ni and Gyeong-hun reach the blimp before it explodes. Chae-ni then teleports herself and the airborne bomb far away from Haeseong City, sacrificing herself to save everyone else.

This leads everyone to believe that she has died, keeping the greater good in mind. However, we soon see Chae-ni alive and well, only unable to teleport back immediately. Instead, she spent time wandering and traveling before eventually returning home, looking exhausted, dirty, and completely alive, thus also completing her wish to see the world outside Haeseong. Talk about killing two birds with one stone!

Is Ha Won-do Really Dead?

Although Won-do appears to die during the destruction of the lab, the final moments reveal him opening his eyes beneath the rubble. Earlier in the episode, Ju-ran injected him with a serum derived from Chae-ni’s blood in a desperate attempt to save him.

Though we don’t see how his body reacts to the serum, it’s possible that Won-do may have successfully gained a version of the Eternal Heart himself.

That final reveal completely changes the meaning of the ending because it suggests the danger is far from over. Even worse, the surviving Wunderkinders already suffer severe side effects from using their powers repeatedly, and Won-do may still be the only person capable of understanding or controlling those mutations.

The finale also hints that Haeseong is only one small part of a much larger world, as secret Wunderkinder subjects may exist elsewhere. The group does not seem devoid of their powers either, as Chae-ni teleports in the kitchen in the very last scene of the show.

It seems like it all ended on a cliffhanger, leaving room for the story to expand further.

The series argues that heroism is not about perfection or destiny. Sometimes it is simply about choosing to help others despite fear, trauma, or uncertainty. Given fans’ reactions and viewership numbers, Netflix may just renew the series for another season. We will just have to wait and see. Share your thoughts on this season in the comments!
