Following The Punisher: One Last Kill, Jon Bernthal wants to continue the story of Frank Castle in his own MCU movie. With Bernthal’s character appearing in multiple MCU projects this year, it finally makes sense to make a Punisher movie.
Bernthal reprised his role as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, his first appearance as the character since the cancellation of his Netflix series in 2019. One year later, Bernthal’s character has a solo adventure in The Punisher: One Last Kill, the Disney+ television special that premieres on May 12.
With Castle fully integrated into the MCU, Bernthal and One Last Kill director Reinaldo Marcus Green want to bring the Punisher’s story to the big screen.
“I don’t know what the plans are for the future of the Punisher. The only thing that we hope that we were able to accomplish is the demand for more if we were able to accomplish that,” Green said to The Direct. “Hopefully, Jon and Marvel will come together to make something worthy of what the audience would want to see out of that character.
“Moving forward. I think, speaking for myself, I know Jon, and I would love to make a movie, something that could go worldwide and be on screens everywhere. But obviously, that’ll be Marvel’s decision.”
Why should Jon Bernthal’s Punisher get his own movie
As Green noted, it will be Marvel’s decision if Bernthal’s Punisher gets to star in his own movie. These next few months are integral for Bernthal’s character, as they can provide the evidence necessary to justify a Punisher movie.
The Punisher: One Last Kill is a trial run for the titular character in a solo story. Initial reactions have been positive, with Bernthal’s performance and the action receiving significant praise.
In just over two months, Bernthal’s Punisher will appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. More people will watch the next Spider-Man movie than the Disney+ special. If Punisher is well-received in Spider-Man 4, it only strengthens Bernthal’s plea for an MCU movie.
Look at how Spider-Man 4 is being pitched as a more grounded story. Keeping up with the multiversal stuff can be quite tiresome and likely works better in Avengers movies instead of solo outings. A dark and gritty Punisher movie could be what audiences crave in between these gigantic Avengers adventures.
Plus, Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, proved that Marvel audiences are fans of mature content featuring the right story and character.
