A highly anticipated HBO Max TV show, Harry Potter, has been renewed for a second season.
The forthcoming Harry Potter show is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max later this year. Coming from showrunner Francesca Gardiner, the new series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The first season adapts the first book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
What is the Harry Potter Season 2 HBO Max TV show update?
Per Deadline, Harry Potter has now officially been renewed for a second season. Production is expected to begin this fall.
This doesn’t come as a huge shock, as HBO has been open about wanting to adapt the entire Harry Potter novel series. CEO Casey Bloys said last fall that the second season was being written and that the goal was not to have a “huge gap” in-between productions.
Additionally, it’s been announced that Jon Brown, who is a writer on the first season, has been bumped up to co-showrunner alongside Gardiner for Season 2.
Gardiner said in a statement, “As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish Season 1 by Christmas and to return to production for Season 2 this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum. I’ve loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on Succession through to these recent times together on Harry Potter. Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him.”
Brown added, “I’m incredibly excited to be collaborating with Francesca as co-showrunner. It has been a joy to write on Philosopher’s Stone, and I’d like to thank Francesca and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey. Seems you’re never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts.”
Harry Potter Season 1 premieres on December 25, 2026.
