Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 has just ended, and its finale featured a massive shift in the status quo of Matt Murdock’s life as a vigilante. The series has swung for the fences before, and like many of them, its latest twist is unlikely to be undone in the future.
What did Charlie Cox say about the Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 twist?
In the Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 finale, Matt Murdock reveals to the world that he is Daredevil. Fans are wondering if the MCU will find a way to “undo” this twist or retcon it somehow, as Daredevil’s secret identity has traditionally been central to who he is, and this would be a massive change going into Season 3. Star Charlie Cox, however, says they aren’t going to undo the twist.
“It was like, Okay, this is a big challenge,” said Cox in an interview with The Wrap. “It’s shocking. I think at that point I thought maybe that would be the final Season. So I was a little shocked to learn quite soon after that we were going to do another one. There was a silence, and I think I said, Okay, it’s a genie I don’t think we can put back in the box. Or at least, I don’t want to put it back in the box.”
With how much input Cox has over his character on Daredevil’s direction, along with five seasons’ worth of buildup to this moment, Season 3 keeping this twist intact paves the way for far more ambitious storytelling. Murdock’s secret identity has long been a defining trait, differentiating him from the Avengers.
Now that he’s been unmasked, it’s unclear whether he can or will return to street-level vigilantism in the MCU’s future. Fans will have to wait a little longer to see if Daredevil returns to the MCU in Spider-Man: Brand New Day later this year, although Cox has declined to be involved in the film.
