PlayStation DRM Issue Explained: The Timeline So Far, and Should You Be Worried?

Sony is back under fire after users discovered a new digital rights management (DRM) policy quietly rolled out with the March 2026 firmware update for the PlayStation 4 and 5. What does it do? The change introduces a 30-day online check-in requirement for newly purchased digital games on both consoles, and Sony has yet to issue an official public statement.

The Timeline of Sony’s Latest Controversy So Far

The timeline of every discovery in the controversy so far

The story begins in March 2026, with Sony rolling out an update pushed to both PS4 and PS5. However, it wasn’t until mid-April 2026 that players began spotting an unusual “Valid Period” field appearing on the digital game info screen. What did it show? A start date, an end date, and a live countdown time on newly purchased titles.

Hugely terrible DRM has now been rolled out to all PS4 and PS5 digital games. Every digital game you buy now requires an online check-in every 30 days. Wasn’t this also the case with games bought earlier? Apparently not. Additionally, this can’t be dodged by using the “Activate console as primary” option in the settings, meaning that, at at least everyone believed when the news first broke, all digital games would expire temporarily if your device was not connected to the internet within 30 days.

While it spread like wildfire, it was content creator Modded Warfare who first published a video bringing the policy to wide attention on April 24, 2026. Shortly after, on April 25, a well-known modder, Lance McDonald, further confirmed this behavior, stating that every new digital game purchased on the PS Store now requires an online license check every 30 days.

Moreover, on April 27, players started reaching out to PlayStation Support for answers. The response, however, only deepened the confusion. The support agents seemingly confirmed the 30-day timer as an intentional policy, describing it as a valid period that applies to all new purchases after March 2026. It’s important to note that this is a response from the company’s AI chatbot, and that later, live agents, on the other hand, have denied the claims of such a policy.

So what’s really happening under the hood? Well, the most significant development in the story came on April 29, 2026, when ResetEra member andshrew, using a jailbroken PS4, published findings that flip the narrative of the whole controversy. It is now suggested that the 30-day timer is directly tied to Sony’s 14-day refund window for digital purchases.

Under the hood, PlayStation appears to initially assign a temporary license to newly purchased games rather than a permanent one. Once the refund window closes, that temporary license is automatically replaced with the standard and indefinite license after 14 days. Sony has yet to release any official statement, but this is the most believable and working theory so far.

Confused about how everything unfolded? Following is a table to help you see the whole timeline in brief:

How Does Sony’s PlayStation DRM Check Work? Should You Be Worried?

At its core, the newly reported DRM system works by assigning a temporary, time-limited license to digital games purchased after the March 2026 firmware update. If a PS4 or PS5 console does not connect to the internet within a rolling 30-day window, that license expires, and the game refuses to launch until an internet connection is restored and the license is re-verified. Importantly, games do not vanish permanently; connecting to the internet restores access.

The suspected reason behind the change, as per the ResetEra findings, is an exploit that allowed users to purchase a game, extract its permanent license file via modded hardware, and then refund the purchase, keeping the game for free. However, by issuing a temporary license first and converting it only after the refund window closes, Sony appears to be closing that loophole.

In a nutshell? If the findings are accurate, then you should not be worried. If you do purchase a game, the license should theoretically convert to a permanent one well before any access issue would ever arise for you.

The story is still developing, and a clear official statement from Sony remains the most important missing piece. Let us know in the comments below what your take is on this whole controversy!
