Dune: Part 3 First 7 Minutes Footage Compares It to Saving Private Ryan

As fans anticipate the final chapter in Paul Atreides’ story, Denis Villeneuve joined Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Jason Momoa on CinemaCon 2026 to unveil the opening of Dune: Part 3 to fans. Although some felt the threequel would lean back from action, as Dune Messiah is a slow burn and action is relatively sparse compared to its predecessors, this doesn’t seem to be the case with this adaptation.

The exclusive footage also sets the record straight on Paul’s descent into the darkness, with Chalamet stressing that Paul has become his worst vision. It also shows Momoa’s ghola confronting Paul about his methods, which have led to the destruction of thousands of worlds, and adds that he’s beyond redemption. However, the major highlight of this opening was the war, which many have drawn parallels with Saving Private Ryan because of its visceral nature, including Jeff Sneider.

Dune: Part Three‘s Opening Offers a Glimpse at Fremen’s Holy War

The opening drops us in the midst of a chaotic planetary invasion by the Fremen troops, who are led by Stilgar into the battle, 17 years after Paul declared war on the Great House.

Although the book never delves into the Holy War in any real detail, Dune: Part Three, on the flip side, drops the audience into the middle of the Fremen’s invasion of a thunderous alien planet. While the Fremen are awestruck after witnessing rain on the alien planet, a plethora of them are butchered following an intense ambush, leaving the rest of the survivors shell-shocked.

Taking to X, Industry Insider Jeff Sneider compared the sequence to Saving Private Ryan because of its visceral intensity, and Sneider is not alone in drawing that parallel.

DUNE: PART THREE Opening 7 Minutes: Holy Fuck! This is Denis doing the opening of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, with a little 1917 thrown in for good measure. Amazon MGM lucked out hiring Denis for Bond. Nolan might even have something to fear this awards season. This may be Denis’ year!— Jeff Sneider (@TheInSneider) April 15, 2026

Although Villeneuve has previously clarified that the story will stay true to Frank Herbert‘s novel, expect this movie to take a different lane in terms of pace and tone compared to its predecessors.

During his appearance at CinemaCon 2026, Denis Villeneuve detailed that he wanted Dune: Part Three to be different from its predecessors in terms of tone and rhythm (via Den of Geek).

Elaborating on it, the Arrival filmmaker stressed that in contrast to the first movie, which was more contemplative, and the second entry, which was more of a war movie, Villeneuve described this third as a thriller. Although this aligns with Herbert’s Messiah, which largely revolves around political intrigue and conspiracy, the auteur further claimed that it’ll be more action-packed and muscular.

I said to myself that it’s a good idea to come back to this world not [with a sense of] nostalgia but of urgency. To go there with a critical eye and not to be self-indulgent. I said to my team that it will be a very different film, a very different Dune movie, have a different tone with a different rhythm, a different pace. If the first movie was more of a contemplation about a boy discovering a new world, and the second one is a war, then this one is a thriller. It’s more action-packed and more dense, more muscular than the other two films.

Going by his remarks, it appears we’ll be offered more insight into this years-long Holy War that has grown beyond Paul’s control.
