One Piece Episode 1158 Review: This “Elbaf” Setup Is Way Stranger Than We Expected

Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains some spoilers from One Piece Episode 1158.

When I sat down to watch One Piece Episode 1158, I was hoping for an exciting, fun, and chaotic Elbaf setup – and somehow ended up watching the crew basically get trapped inside what feels like a giant toy box. Yeah, this episode becomes weird really fast.

What I enjoy the most about this episode is how, initially, it feels like classic One Piece crazy chaos, yet over time, it becomes obvious that there is something not quite right. Not in a “Oh my god, this cannot be happening” way, but rather, “Hmm, this is not quite right” way. However, even with that, the episode still offered moments we can enjoy and laugh out loud. Let us get into the details now.

One Piece Episode 1158 Starts With Some Seriously Weird Vibe

After that chaotic and funny ending of One Piece Episode 1157, this episode starts with our Straw Hat crew (basically Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Nami, and Usopp) deciding that they should explore the weird place to understand where exactly they are right now.

First, they come across a random guy riding a giant grasshopper, and he seems to be completely relaxed about discussing “The Land of the Gods.” The way he refers to the animals as gods was honestly hilarious at first, especially knowing the crew already beat or ate half of them. Luffy kept almost revealing himself every five seconds while Usopp tried to silence him, and that made me laugh so much.

Then that guy explains one by one about something like “Sun God,” the temple, and some powerful temple guards protecting it – this is the part where I genuinely paused for a moment. Then, after hearing all these, Luffy gets excited and runs ahead (as usual), and sees someone. He thought he could run past him, and then bam, he runs right into a mirror! When I saw the mirror break and the “sky” start to break apart, I knew this was an episode that would change everything!

Then it turned out that the whole place was essentially a gigantic diorama. Like an actual set – a fake world. I am not even exaggerating when I say this changed how I looked at everything instantly. The animals, the layout, the lack of real buildings – it all makes sense now. They are not exploring a country – they are inside something that was built.

Also, that detail about the mirror being see-through from the outside? That was creepy. Like, someone could have been watching them this whole time. I do not know why, but that part stuck with me more than the reveal itself.

Shortly afterward, Tony Tony Chopper meets up with the rest of the crew, and the overall mood lightens a bit. Then, Roronoa Zoro straight-up says a giant probably made this whole thing for entertainment, and honestly, that was kind of unsettling when you think about it.

One Piece Goes Full Chaos Mode With the “Sun God” Arrival

Of course, this would not be One Piece without things going completely off the rails. The “guards,” I love the fact that how totally absurd and ridiculously threatening these three creatures are – A giant snake, some mice, and a raven??? Who would have thought that these creature types would have created this level of intensity? And yet, Luffy enters gear 5 and just turns the whole situation into absolute chaos.

And then, the place literally caught fire during the fight? Yeah, that escalated quickly. Then we finally get to see the so-called “Sun God,” and I will be honest – I expected something more God-like than this. Instead, the reaction we get is more like someone freaking out because their carefully built setup is getting destroyed. That actually made the whole situation more interesting to me, because now it feels less like mythology and more like someone playing god.

The final escape of this episode was just a lot of fun. Luffy forces Iscat (the giant cat) to give them a ride on his back, and everyone rushes to escape, and Nami hangs on to her blueprint like she is the only one who has a plan – all of it just felt very Straw Hat, not gonna lie. By the time the episode ended, I was wondering who made this place, why they are here, and whether this is even the real Elbaf or just some twisted version of it.

One Piece Episode 1158 Final Verdict

Overall, One Piece Episode 1158 was full of fun and obviously a lot weird as well. It starts off goofy, makes you laugh, and then suddenly you are sitting there like, wait, what is actually going on?

I had a lot of fun watching this one, but more importantly, it got me really curious about where this arc is heading. If this is how Oda is setting up Elbaf, then we are in for something very different – and I am all in for it.

One Piece is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
