Eric Kripke’s The Boys season 5, episode 1, marks the beginning of the hit Prime Video streaming sensation’s conclusion. Bigger, badder, and bloodier than ever, the cultural touchstone is a visceral, bloody, disgusting good time. The episode is filled with standout performances and a wicked sense of ominous humor, and its satirical wit continues to astonish. We should give a quick recap of how the show ended last season before we recap.
Butcher, with his new superpowers, kills Neuman and takes the virus. Speaker of the House Calhoun is now the President, while Sage reveals to Homelander that this was the plan all along. Calhoun declares martial law and deputizes Homelander. All are arrested, except for Annie, who escaped. Homelander reveals that Soldier Boy is alive and confined. During a town hall meeting, Homelander (Antony Starr) riles up anti-supe activists while Annie (Erin Moriarty), posing as Firecracker, breaks into the facility’s control room. As Homelander speaks, an IT worker plays footage, while Annie fights off Black Noir II (Ginny & Georgia’s Nathan Mitchell), of Homelander refusing to save the passengers of Transoceanic Flight 37.
Of course, this happened in The Boys Season 1, Episode 4, titled “The Female of the Species.” Homelander is about to kill everyone at the rally, who now look at him in shock, but Sister Sage (Orange Is the New Black’s Susan Heyward) stops him. Later, during a televised press conference, Sage tells the American public that the video was AI-generated.

Homelander addresses the issue with Firecracker (Valorie Curry) on her show, The Truth Bomb. He points out that the video is AI-generated because it shows him with seven fingers. However, Gillman is not handling it well. He is used to burying issues like this under the rug. Now, he, Sage, has him waiting patiently, but he kills the stage manager after discovering that the stage manager was the leak.
Meanwhile, Homelander sends for The Deep (Chace Crawford) and Black Noir after they finish their podcast. He wants to know how they let Starlight escape? He also demands that they find A-Train (Jessie T. Usher). Frenchie (Tomar Capone), Hughie (Novocaine’s Jack Quaid), and Mother (Laz Alonso) are in the prison camp. They are alerted that they will be killed in less than 76 hours.
Prime Video’s The Boys Season 5 Episode 1: Does Billy Kill His Father?

We assume we see Butcher (Karl Urban) kill his father, Sam (John Noble). However, we don’t actually see it happen after he gives him a very tight hug. Cut to the Philippines, where Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) is hiding out in Manila. Billy finds her and brings her back, and they arrive unannounced at Annie’s place. They inform her that they are going to kill their friends in prison. Oh, and Kimiki can now speak, by the way.
Of course, the guys in prison and the gang outside know it is a trap to catch Annie. We find out that Barrett (Jessica Jones’s Colby Minifie) is now the Vice President. She is engaged to Oh-Father (Blindspotting’s Daveed Diggs), a deeply religious supe. Sage interrupts Firecracker’s exclusive interview with the happy couple. She wants the VP to arrest anyone who posts anything negative about Homelander online.

Annie tries to recruit A-Train, who refuses to help because he now has a family. He travels to France, where he is hiding his brother, sister-in-law, and nephew. While on the beach, they see seagulls circling in the ocean, and A-Train knows it is The Deep. After taking his family to a safe location, he confronts the supe about his zoophilia. A-Train knows that The Deep is scared of Homelander, like he once was.
A-Train leaves him on the beach. Meanwhile, Billy finds a supe with worm-like abilities who can eat dirt and expel it from his body. Unfortunately, they don’t know Homelander is already in the camp, holding them, waiting for their rescue. The worm-like supe gets them into the underground camp, where they find Homelander with all three on their knees, their mouths covered with duct tape. However, Starlight uses her powers and the camp lights to blind him, so her friends can escape.
Prime Video’s The Boys Season 5 Episode 1 Ending Explained: How Does A-Train Die?

The Boys Season 5 episode 1 ends with a day of reckoning for A-Train. As all hell breaks loose, Mother’s Milk kills a vindictive guard, Billy attempts to take out a sniper who pops people like balloons from a distance with his mind and a squeeze of his hand, and Frenchie carries his love, now cut in half by Homelander, to safety. A-Train arrives, ready to save them, right after Starlight carries Frenchie and Kimiko to safety.
Annie leaves Hughie behind, and he is about to be killed by Homelander. However, with Billy too far away to save him, Hughie slows down time. He knocks the gun out of a guard’s hand and pulls the grenade pins from their vest to save Mother’s Milk. Then A-Train pulls Hughie out of the way. In doing so, he falls with him. Homelander, realizing it is A-Train, chases him out of the camp. Annie returns, but Hughie asks her, “Where the hell were you?”
Meanwhile, A-Train is tripped up by a random civilian. Instead of running through her, as he did with Hughie’s girlfriend in the pilot episode, he avoids her. He loses his glasses, which help him avoid obstacles at high speeds. He stumbles, bouncing off trees in the woods. Homelander catches him and pins him against a tree. A-Train calls him pathetic. America’s greatest hero then snaps A-Train’s neck, killing him and leaving him on the ground.
