In Prime Video’s The Boys, season 5, episode 2, Eric Kripke and his team of truth-tellers and clairvoyant soothsayers have learned never to turn their backs on their core audience. (Has any show reflected the times we live and breathe in?) Yet, like a magic trick, it fully unveils what the series is all about, igniting the series and the characters like a powder keg.
In the final season’s latest chapter, we see the return of Soldier Boy (Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles, who gets a special mention early, because women, young and old, will come flocking to our site at the mere mention of, yes, Jensen Ackles). The supe who amounts to Homelander’s wet dream is back from his deep freeze, ready to defend America from another MAGA day.

Sameer (The Mandalorian’s Omid Abtahi) is helping Billy (Karl Urban) develop a virus to kill all supes, but mainly Homelander. Billy tells Sameer that Homelander killed Neuman, not him, which is why he’s going along with it. Right now, Billy has Sameer holed up in a lab in an abandoned office building in Erie, Pennsylvania, the fentanyl overdose capital of the world.
This is an interesting plot development. Obviously, Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and Frenchie (Tomar Capone) hate Sameer because he injected the virus into her leg last season. Hughie faces an ethical dilemma, saying they need to stop Butcher. However, M.M. and Annie think that killing 10,000 supes to save billions is a fair trade-off. This points to an eventual friction between Hughie and Starlight.

Of course, that doesn’t stop Annie (Erin Moriarty) from ripping off Hughie’s (Novocaine’s Jack Quaid) er, proclaiming that her bottom half has regrown fully and her vagina is now “tingly” as ever. Billy says they will test the virus on Rock Hard, a towering cement super who is almost impenetrable, meaning the virus won’t escape his body.
While these four are seeing “the light,” so does Homelander (Antony Starr) during a memorial for A-Train. Led by Oh-Father (Blindspotting’s Daveed Diggs), quite literally, a light shines on his face during an almost Pentecostal-style celebration. He mourns the loss of A-Train over his harsh leadership style. However, he then decides to thaw out Soldier Boy to locate Billy.

Sister Sage (Orange Is the New Black’s Susan Heyward) briefs the President, the Vice President, Firecracker (Valorie Curry), and the Deep on the thousands of Starlight sympathizers. They open three more freedom camps, filling them with anti-Homelander dissidents. That is when Homelander brings in Soldier Boy to help with the fight. The President signs off, as long as this never traces back to him.
However, a snag in the Rock Hard plan emerges. The drive to Planet Vought and the discovery that he has grown to 30,000 pounds in molten form. He holds his breath, which means they cannot inject him, as he can sustain it for hours. M.M. finds the social media darling Countess Crow (Never Have I Ever’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) upstairs. Annie tells Mother they have to kill her.

Billy, Kimiko, and Hughie drive back to see Sameer to retrieve the virus, which they carry in a very fragile container. If it breaks, it will kill not only every supe but the entire human race. On the way back, Soldier Boy throws his shield into the windshield of the sh*tbox Billy is driving, nearly breaking the vial Hughie is holding. Billy tells them that Mallory put Ben “on ice,” which is why he is not dead.
Of course, Soldier Boy has no idea that a virus exists capable of killing them all. Billy lets Hughie and Kimiko run. Because Homelander craves validation from his father, he will never get it. Billy tells Ben there is a virus that could kill them all, but Ben doesn’t trust him and escapes by throwing a car at him. Oh, and let’s remember that Soldier Boy is super homophobic and racist, so he sends two super influencers after Hughie and Kimiko.

The Boys Season 5 episode 2 ends with Soldier Boy being infected with the virus, along with Rock Hard, and the douche-bag influencer supe that could fly. After the latter drops Hughie from the sky, Starlight saves him, flying him back to Planet Vought. Soldier Boy chases Billy inside. When Ben has Hughie inside, he realizes that the vile is empty. The young supe and Rock Hard begin to cough up a black substance and fall over.
Ben turns around and sees Sameer in an oxygen mask; Hughie puts one on as well. Sameer drips the virus onto the floor. Soldier Boy falls over and dies. The rest of the team leaves. However, we see Countess Crow in the distance. M.M. signals for her to be quiet so no one knows she survived. Kimiko tells Frenchie they have to stay, and there is no outrunning the virus.
Oh, and by the way, at the end, after Homelander cries over his dead father, who is lying on a gurney in a body bag, he sits up, and the episode fades to black. So, is Soldier Boy alive or not?
