A major X-Men character is going to be murdered at this year’s Hellfire Gala.
The Hellfire Gala has become a tradition in Marvel Comics. It originated as an event that saw the X-Men open up Krakoa — a safe haven that the mutants all previously lived on for a time — to the rest of the planet for a massive party. Three Hellfire Galas were held on Krakoa; however, the night turned into something of a massacre during the 2023 event, as that one-shot kicked off the Fall of X event, which ultimately led to the end of the Krakoan Age.
A vigil commemorating the one-year anniversary of Krakoa’s fall was held in 2025; now, however, it’s been announced that the event is fully coming back this coming summer.
What is Marvel teasing about the Hellfire Gala and a major X-Men death?
X-Men: The Hellfire Murder #1 comes from Jed MacKay, Gail Simone, Eve L. Ewing, Saladin Ahmed, Erica Schultz, Tony Daniel, Luciano Vecchio, Federica Mancin, and more. The one-shot features cover art by Vecchio and variant covers by R.B. Silva, Rogê Antônio, and Skottie Young.

The story will feature plenty of reunions, romance, and the reveal of an all-new Hellfire Club; however, there will also be an important X-Men character who is murdered during the event.
The solicitation reads, “HOMICIDE AT THE HELLFIRE GALA! When an iconic mutant power player is murdered at an exclusive masquerade hosted by Sebastian Shaw, it falls to Wolverine and Jubilee to solve a locked-room mystery that has dire consequences for all mutantkind. Everyone is a suspect. And the party isn’t over yet…”
Vecchio said in a statement, “Doing Hellfire Gala designs is always a pleasure. his time around, it’s a masquerade, so the challenge was to come up with looks that divert from each character’s classic iconography to reflect their mask’s theme. The dress code is a callback to classic Hellfire Club attire, so there’s 18th-century fashion mixed with corsets and leather gear, but mixing up the gendering of those elements, resulting in something elegant and sexy.”
Marvel‘s X-Men: The Hellfire Murder #1 arrives on July 22, 2026.
