The movie was written and directed by del Toro. It was produced by Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Mike Richardson, with Mignola and Patrick Palmer serving as executive producers. The creative team included director of photography Guillermo Navarro, editor Peter Amundson, and composer Marco Beltrami. Following its critical success, a sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, was released in 2008, with Perlman reprising the titular character.
