Dan Trachtenberg, the director of Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers, and Predator: Badlands, recently reflected on the prospect of returning to the franchise for which he helmed his first feature. Trachtenberg’s debut full-length movie was 10 Cloverfield Lane, the second entry in the Cloverfield franchise. Notably, the filmmaker has inked a first-look deal with Paramount, one of the owners of the Cloverfield franchise.

Trachtenberg spoke about the idea of making another Cloverfield movie during a new interview with ScreenRant. The filmmaker clarified that he didn’t return to Paramount to make one of those films, but hinted he “could” potentially helm another entry in the franchise.
“It was almost like a, ‘Oh my God, wait,’ when we were talking about stuff, it came up, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, wait a second. I’ve done that. I could, maybe,’” Trachtenberg recalled. “So maybe, and I certainly kept in touch with the folks at Bad Robot and J.J. [Abrams], and we’ve certainly discussed different things over the years, not Cloverfield related.”
Trachtenberg directed 10 Cloverfield Lane from a screenplay by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken, and Damien Chazelle. The movie’s cast includes John Goodman as Howard, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle, and John Gallagher Jr. as Emmett. The movie was a critical and commercial success, earning over $110 million at the global box office, and it currently has a 91% approval rating on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 319 reviews.
This isn’t the first time that Trachtenberg has discussed making another Cloverfield movie. He told CinemaBlend in 2023 that he was open to making a sequel to 10 Cloverfield Lane and that he and Winstead had spoken about it.
The Cloverfield franchise is made up of largely standalone movies that are loosely connected by mysterious monsters. At present, there are three movies in the franchise, with a fourth on the way.
