HBO’s new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is earning praise worldwide for being a great character-focused story of Westerosi history. Particular praise is heaped upon the creators for adapting the source material, George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, faithfully.
In sharp contrast, House of the Dragon is looser and has a more controversial approach to the lore of Fire & Blood. The show is not performing as well as expected, with George R. R. Martin and his fans upset over the handling of the story, pushing Martin towards A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
HBO’s Game of Thrones Prequel Learnt From Its Own History
HBO’s third Westeros show has clearly learnt from its predecessors, especially the mistakes of House of the Dragon. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrived on HBO Max with a splash of rave reviews, and Martin himself said in his blog post:
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an adaptation of The Hedge Knight, the first of the novellas I wrote about them. It’s as faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredibly reasonable I am on that particular subject).
The show is fixing the gaps of the pseudo-history left behind by House of the Dragon’s attempts to rewrite a lot of established lore. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms lifts its script almost word-for-word from the novellas, including Dunk’s awkward eulogy for Ser Arlan.
Here are key details of the show.

Critics and audiences also note that the show’s small-scale, intimate setting allows for more complex character and plot work, rather than relying on heavy CGI spectacle to overcompensate. Dunk and Egg are already growing to become favourites in the fandom, while House of the Dragon is trying its best to convince us it’s on track.
What Does This Mean For House of the Dragon’s Future?

The success of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms comes at a time when hype for the next season of House of the Dragon seems to be lagging. The production for Season 3 is currently facing a storm of delays, conflict, and, mainly, audience fatigue from waiting around.
House of the Dragon is haunted by damaging the creative trust of George R. R. Martin, who was initially actively involved as a showrunner with Ryan Condal. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin had nothing but ‘abysmal’ things to say about Condal:
He basically stopped listening to me… It got worse and worse, and I began to get more and more annoyed. Finally, it got to a point where I was told by HBO that I should submit all my notes to them and they would give Ryan our combined notes…. This is not my story any longer.
Martin happily went on to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms with full creative control. House of the Dragon has promised a great surprise with the Battle of the Gullet, a cliffhanger left by the previous season. The show plans to end in the fourth season, so will we see a Game of Thrones repeat of rushed narratives?
House of the Dragon will have to outdo its colleague or maintain strong viewership to justify fans of the universe after a two-year-long wait without George R. R. Martin’s active help. Compared to that, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms looks like it’s going to be the one show that takes the throne for us.
