The award season is here, and a lot of movies have already proved their worth, nabbing the best titles. The BAFTAs are considered to be one of the most prestigious events in Hollywood, and for its movies, yet a strange detail has been noticed by its followers. While we slowly move towards the Academy Awards, the BAFTA recently announced its Best Animated Films nominations, and surprisingly, KPop Demon Hunters was absent from it.
The BAFTA longlist was uploaded on January 9, which included Arco, The Bad Guys 2, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, Elio, Little Amelie, and Zootopia 2. While there was no mention of Netflix’s most loved animated film, it is highly possible that the entry in question will remain off the list even in Oscars. In another scenario, even if it does, KPop Demon Hunters have the least chance to take home the grand accolade this year.
In case you missed seeing the pattern in the past few years, the one that is in the BAFTA’s nomination list or is the winner, takes home the Oscars, or at least enters the list of Academy Awards.
In 2024, the winner of BAFTA was The Boy and the Heron, the same that nabbed the Oscars later that year.
Will KPop Demon Hunters be a part of this year’s Oscars? Only time will tell.
KPop Demon Hunters Shine at Critics Choice Awards
KPop Demon Hunters may not have entered the nominations for BAFTA, but successfully grabbed the attention at the recently held Critics’ Choice Awards. On Sunday, January 4, the winners were announced at the annual award ceremony.
Interestingly, KPop Demon Hunters not only took home the Best Animated Feature award but also grabbed the Best Song awards for Golden, by Ejae, Mark Sonnenblick, Ido, 24, Teddy.
In the Best Animated Film category, other nominated entries were Arco, Elio, In Your Dreams, Little Amélie, and Zootopia 2.
Meanwhile, in the Best Song category, the films were, F1 with the song Drive, Sinners’s I Lied to You, The Testament of Ann Lee for its track, Clothed by the Sun, as well as Train Dreams with its titular song, and Wicked: For Good for The Girl in the Bubble.

Back in November 2025, it was reported that Netflix and Sony shook hands over another KPop Demon Hunters entry. Per Variety, the plans to hit the screens with the sequel to the animated film are aimed at 2029.
However, the producer behind the first film had something else to say. Michelle Wong, who was present for the New York Film Critics Circle award ceremony, denied having any idea about the sequel.
While talking to Variety, in another report, she added,
We are deep into the award season and just trying to focus on that. So once that’s over and we have some time, possibly? But there has to be a reason to make No. 2, and we haven’t figured that out yet.
With all eyes on the Academy Awards, let’s have our fingers crossed for another entry of the musical animated feature. What are your thoughts on KPop Demon Hunters? Share with us in the comments below!
