Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution
2026 is going to be a big year for Jujutsu Kaisen, as the third and one of the most important seasons of the anime series is scheduled to be released on January 8, 2026. However, before fans can enjoy the beginning of the highly anticipated Culling Game, the creators decided to surprise fans with a special Jujutsu Kaisen movie called Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution acts as a transition between season 2 and season 3 of the anime series, and it focuses on Yuta killing Yuji Itadori as he is Sukuna’s vessel. However, it introduces one of the biggest twists of how Yuta staged everything to fool the authorities in order to protect Yuji at Gojo’s request, thus marking the beginning of the Culling Game arc.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution: Ending Explained: Does Yuji Really Die?
Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution helps fans connect the events of the Shibuya Incident arc to the beginning of the Culling Games. As season 2 ended with Yuta Okkotsu making a special appearance and announcing his decision to kill Yuji Itadori to avenge Toge, the movie explains that transition as he teams up with Naoya Zenin. Yuji, after reconciling with Choso, decides to kill as many curses as possible, but they face the danger of Naoya Zenin and Yuta Okkotsu.
As the two engage in a thrilling battle against each other, Yuta decides to call upon Rika and end it once and for all. Rika executes him, and he drags Yuji’s body to the place where Naoya was battling with Choso. He asks Naoya to inform the higher-ups that Yuji Itadori has been executed. The scene then transitions into a flashback, and following that, Yuji Itadori wakes up in front of him.
This was the biggest turn in the movie as it confirms that Yuta didn’t really kill Yuji, but he just staged it so that the higher-ups could leave him alone. This is when Megumi joins the scene and explains the situation of the Culling games, and asks Yuji to help him save his sister. They then reunite with other sorcerers to find out more about the Culling games from Tengen, and the movie ends on a cliffhanger in order to maintain the anticipation for season 3.
Yuta’s plan to stage Yuji’s killing not only clears the doubts that fans had about his character but also solidifies his place as one of the most important characters in the upcoming season. The two have now formed a bond that will most likely help them deal with the upcoming threats that will push the boundaries of their abilities and reshape the balance of power in the Jujutsu world, especially during the Culling Games arc.

Ever since it was confirmed that Yuta Okkotsu was given the job of killing Yuji Itadori, Jujutsu Kaisen fans have been confused. Many were wondering why Yuta would agree to something like that. And while the movie may have cleared all these doubts, it has also left fans wondering about the consequences of Yuta lying to the higher-ups and staging Yuji’s death.
In terms of the story, Gege Akutami never focused on the higher-ups finding out about the fact that Yuta staged Yuji’s death. However, in terms of the Culling Games arc, Yuta’s actions of saving Yuji helped the sorcerers in a major way and also brought the biggest problem for them. Yuta knew that dealing with Kenjaku would require a lot of effort, and thus, his decision to save Yuji was right in some sense.
However, it also leads to a development where the biggest threat within the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, Ryomen Sukuna, gets a chance to unleash his true strength and wreak havoc, which the higher-ups feared. Thus, it was certainly a complex decision, and the consequences of it will be revealed in the future seasons of Jujutsu Kaisen. Do you think Yuta was right in staging Yuji’s death? Let us know below!
Jujutsu Kaisen is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
