Sam Witwer addressed one of the biggest questions on Star Wars fans’ minds as Maul – Shadow Lord‘s first season wraps up on Disney Plus. The actor and consulting producer offered a promising tease about when audiences can expect the series’ already-confirmed second season.
Star Wars fans won’t have to wait long for Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2
Sam Witwer confirmed that Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 will not keep fans waiting long, as reported by The Direct. The actor and consulting producer stated he already knows the release date. However, he remains unable to share that information publicly.

“It’s not a situation where the audiences will have to wait too, too long,” Witwer said. He added that the team has already been developing the second season for some time. Disney+ officially renewed Shadow Lord for Season 2 in April 2026.
Meanwhile, previous Star Wars animated series offer useful context for predicting the timeline. The Clone Wars and Rebels both followed annual release cycles during their runs. The Bad Batch dropped its first two seasons roughly 18 months apart. As a result, a fall or late 2027 premiere for Season 2 appears likely based on those precedents.
Beyond the release window, Witwer admitted he underestimated how passionately audiences would embrace the show. “My prediction for Shadow Lord was, ‘Yeah, I think we have the goods,’” Witwer said. “I did not necessarily see all of the passion and how hardcore everyone is locked into this show,” he continued.
Naturally, that overwhelming reception has raised the stakes for the entire creative team going forward. “The entire team, myself included, feels a tremendous responsibility to slam our foot into the gas,” Witwer explained. He stressed the importance of continuing to discover new creative territory for the series.
Additionally, Lucasfilm President Dave Filoni has pushed the crew to elevate their work even further. Filoni called on the Shadow Lord team to make Season 2 the best thing they have ever produced. Witwer described the franchise as a “modern myth” carrying deep storytelling responsibilities.
Shadow Lord currently holds an impressive 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Season 1 finale aired on Disney+ on May 4 for Star Wars Day.
