Kylian Mbappe takes PSG to court

Fresh reports have emerged indicating that Kylian Mbappe is set to take his former club, PSG, to court over unpaid dues.

France captain Kylian Mbappé has taken his long-running dispute with Paris St-Germain to a Paris labour court, where he is seeking €263m (£231.5m) from his former club. PSG have filed their own claim, demanding €240m (£211m) from the player.

The 26-year-old Real Madrid forward says he is owed the amount, which includes €55m (£46.3m) in unpaid wages, as compensation for a contract disagreement and what he describes as unfair treatment during his final months at the club.

PSG’s counterclaim relates to the collapse of a proposed €300m move to the Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in 2023. The club argue they suffered financially when Mbappé turned down the transfer and later joined Real Madrid on a free transfer the following summer.

A ruling is not expected for several weeks. The conflict dates back to July 2023, when Mbappé rejected the Saudi offer and refused to extend his contract.

He believes he was punished for this decision by being excluded from PSG’s pre-season tour of Asia and left out of their first match of the season before eventually returning to the team.

PSG maintains that this came after the player had agreed to forgo certain end-of-contract bonuses to help the club’s financial situation, a claim Mbappé’s representatives have dismissed as false. They insist he is still owed both salary and bonus payments.

After Monday’s hearing, PSG stated they were seeking recognition of the significant damage they believe Mbappé caused through what they call serious breaches of his contractual obligations. The club also accuse him of acting in bad faith by hiding his decision not to renew his contract between July 2022 and June 2023.

PSG deny any suggestion of pressure or mistreatment, saying Mbappé enjoyed exceptional conditions during his seven years at the club.

Mbappé scored 256 goals in 308 matches for PSG, winning 15 trophies. His initial claim for the €55m in unpaid wages was first handled by French football authorities before being escalated to the courts.
