The Oscar-nominated Hollywood star, Colin Farrell, is not satisfied with one DC credit under his belt. The actor’s enthusiasm when talking about the shelved Sgt. Rock movie is so infectious that it belies the 2 (soon-to-be) fantastic movies and an Emmy-winning series that he is an integral part of.
As the Penguin, Farrell is not diminished enough in his DC Elseworlds role to star as Sergeant Rock, DC’s very own version of Captain America. There are plenty more actors in Hollywood hungry for a role that could cement their status in the ever-revolving industry.
However, for now, the Irishman is simply interested in seeing the “fantastic script” off the ground. (via Happy Sad Confused podcast)
Colin Farrell Rallies for Sgt. Rock Movie in James Gunn’s DCU
On 17th March 2025, Deadline reported the involvement of Colin Farrell in Luca Guadagnino‘s Sgt. Rock movie after Daniel Craig‘s departure. 44 days later, on 30th April 2025, Variety confirmed that the project was no longer in development.
The shelved movie has gained significant momentum since then among a niche corner of the DC fan base. But that’s not all. Farrell himself is now rallying for the script to get picked up by the new regime as James Gunn‘s DCU takes off among much pomp, acclaim, and fanfare. Superman lent him that credibility.
In his brief chat regarding the Guadagnino script, Farrell mentioned on Happy Sad Confused:
God, that was a fantastic script. I wonder what’s happening with it. I was gonna do it with Luca, and we spoke a couple of times, had some really nice chats, but I have no idea where it is now. It should be made. It’s really, really good. There’s some wonderful stuff in it.
Such exaltation of the script from a veteran actor, no less, must surely mean that the movie is worth investing in. Whatever reasons James Gunn and Peter Safran have in not picking it up, or at least giving some voice to the rumor, is beyond understanding.
Meanwhile, Variety claims that the film has not been shelved indefinitely, but rather is on hold until the studio hopefully picks it back up in 2026, “hopefully” being the key word. Luca Guadagnino’s involvement with the script can no longer be confirmed as per The Wrap.
Who Is Sgt. Rock, DC’s Very Own Captain America?

In many ways, Sergeant Franklin John Rock of DC is very similar to Steve Rogers of Marvel. Both comic book characters have found themselves dropped into the chaos and mayhem of World War II, where Sgt. Rock led a disparate unit of soldiers and called it the Easy Company, while Captain America’s disparate unit of soldiers was named the Howling Commandos.
Sgt. Rock also demonstrates superhuman strength and endurance, much like his Marvel counterpart. He is a trained marksman, an excellent military combatant, and can survive a large number of gunshot wounds, hand grenade explosions, and freezing temperatures.
The character first appeared in Our Army at War #83 in June 1959, 18 years and 3 months after the conception of Captain America (March 1941), and was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert.
