Being one of the producers of Die My Love, Martin Scorsese handpicked Jennifer Lawrence for the role of Grace in the upcoming flick, Die My Love. The iconic director cited her 2017 movie Mother! as the reason for his casting.
The director’s quote was published on X, and according to Scorsese, Die My Love was exactly the kind of challenge that an actress like Jennifer Lawrence needed after her role in Mother!.
I said, ‘You know what? This is a challenge. This is the kind of thing you should be doing. Go take a chance. Knock any sense of a comfortable character off the board and just go for it.’

During a segment on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen (via LADBible), Lawrence discussed the meaning of her 2017 movie, Mother!.
During her talks, she joked that although she was a part of it, she did not understand much of the movie. When asked how much she understood on a scale of ‘one to totally confused’, here’s what she had for a reply:
I’m going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had CliffsNotes. So… five? Or a four. But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do!
Lawrence and director Darren Aronofsky dated for a year in November 2017 (one month after the release of the movie). Although she might not have understood the entirety of the movie (neither did I), it did give her the gift of starring in Die My Love.
How Jennifer Lawrence’s Performance in Mother! Became Central To Die My Love
Die My Love is a black comedy-drama film that showcases the effects of postpartum depression on Grace, a writer and a young mother. Locked away in a house in Montana, her erratic and increasingly dangerous behavior worries her partner, Jackson, who feels helpless and worried.
Similarly, in Mother!, Jennifer Lawrence portrays the role of a mother with a newborn child. However, things take a (weird) turn when her house has two uninvited neighbors. The film slowly descends into darkness as her house is filled to the brim with people and features a cult-like ending at the end.
Naturally, her performance in Mother! proved to be the perfect fit for Die My Love since both films feature Lawrence as a mother, concerned for her newborn baby, while people around her (including herself) become more erratic and obscure as the movie progresses.
It’s no wonder Martin Scorsese immediately selected Jennifer Lawrence for the role after watching her performance in Mother!.
