James Gunn recently announced Man of Tomorrow, which has led many fans to wonder if it is Superman 2. However, he has previously confirmed whether Man of Tomorrow will be the sequel to his 2025 movie, Superman, or not. The plot details of the recently announced movie are under wraps, and it is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.
James Gunn has already confirmed that Man of Tomorrow is not Superman 2
With the announcement of Man of Tomorrow by James Gunn, fans were wondering if it is the Superman sequel, Superman 2. However, the DC co-CEO made this clarification on social media in August.
On one of his posts on Threads, where Gunn stated that he was busy with sequel writing, a user named @alexromval asked, “I’m a little confused right now. Is this the same movie you’ve talked about in the past, the one where you said Superman had a major role but wasn’t exactly a sequel? Or is this a different movie, and this one is actually ‘SUPERMAN 2’?”
To this, the veteran filmmaker replied, “Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It’s not Superman 2.” Another user asked Gunn if this movie is “not a direct sequel to Superman?” In response, he conveyed that Peacemaker Season 2 is more of a direct sequel to Superman, featuring David Corenswet.
Along with the announcement of Man of Tomorrow and its release date, Gunn also shared an image of Superman, standing next to Lex Luthor, teasing the plot of the movie. In the image, Luthor is wearing an armored suit, which he also creates in the comics to beat Superman.

While speaking about the Superman follow-up in an interview with Collider in August 2025, James Gunn said, “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga’. The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”
