A month after the theatrical release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, a new rumor about Marvel Studios’ original plan for Herbie has surfaced online. Since its debut, the superhero movie has maintained its Certified Fresh rating of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 387 reviews.
What was the rumored plan for Fantastic Four’s Herbie?
Shared on X, user Cryptic HD Quality claimed that the titular team’s beloved robot assistant Herbie originally died in the initial version of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. According to the rumor, it was Ben/The Thing who would have found Herbie’s mangled body in a back alley.
“Some time after the people find out that the 4 will not sacrifice Franklin, Ben goes out for a night stroll and gets heckled at by some guys who run past him,” the rumor stated. “He later finds Herbie’s mangled body in that back alley they ran from. He brings Herbie home, and the others are in shock.”
This would have been a dark ending for the fan-favorite character who had already captured fans’ hearts with his charming chemistry with the team and reliability. At the end of the movie’s final cut, Herbie remains unharmed and continues his duties as a valuable member of the team.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps was directed by Matt Shakman, who previously helmed all nine episodes of the WandaVision miniseries. The latest MCU movie was led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/ Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. After First Steps, they will be returning in Avengers: Doomsday. Additional cast members include Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer, Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Natasha Lyonne, and Paul Walter Hauser.
