Imagine a world where Han Solo had a little thick voice, and he carried a gun similar to a gangster with a leaned-in posture. Doesn’t look right, right? However, that would have been the character of Han Solo had Al Pacino not refused the script for Star Wars!

The actor, who talked about his regrets (which he prefers to call ‘mistakes’), talked about turning down the role of Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise, having life lessons learnt the hard way, and more in an interview.

Al Pacino regrets turning down the script for Star Wars!

Visionary director George Lucas directed and released Star Wars: Episode IV -A New Hope in 1977. The film featured Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford as the main leads and went on to earn millions at the global box office.

However, that was just the beginning. The film went on to create sequels as George Lucas had planned, and the actors and their characters went on to become a global pop cultural phenomenon that we know and love today.

Before Harrison Ford was cast in the role of Han Solo, the script had actually gone to iconic star Al Pacino, who had already found fame with The Godfather in 1972.

In an interview with The Talks, Al Pacino revealed that although he doesn’t consider it a regret, the actor stated that his first big mistake was turning down Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

I don’t regret anything. I feel that I’ve made what I would call mistakes. I picked the wrong movie, or I didn’t pursue a character or I played somebody and made some choices… But everything you do is a part of you.

When asked about turning down the Star Wars script, here’s what Al Pacino had for an answer:

Star Wars. Yeah, that was my first big mistake.

The world would have been a lot different if Al Pacino had just said yes to that role, and the Star Wars franchise would have been a lot different as well. We wouldn’t have gotten the Harrison Ford-Carrie Fisher affair or the iconic moments where Ford shone as Han Solo.

However, even Al Pacino had reasons to deny the script at the time. Although he considers it a mistake, Pacino wasn’t at fault because he didn’t know any better at the time.

Why Al Pacino rejected the Star Wars script!

As stated earlier, Pacino had just found fame for his role as Michael Corleone in the iconic 1972 film The Godfather and had reprised the role in 1974 with The Godfather Part II.

After this fame had found its way to Pacino, the actor revealed that everyone wanted him to play some other role in their movies. In an interview with Variety, the actor revealed that he didn’t know any better.

That’s why, when the script for Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope reached the office of Pacino, the actor wasn’t able to understand the character of Han Solo.

Well, I turned down ‘Star Wars.’ When I first came up, I was the new kid on the block. You know what happens when you first become famous. It’s like, ‘Give it to Al.’ They’d give me Queen Elizabeth to play.

He continued,

They gave me a script called ‘Star Wars.’ They offered me so much money. I don’t understand it. I read it. So I said I couldn’t do it.

Well, the amazing wonders of the Butterfly Effect led to Harrison Ford agreeing to audition for the role, and George Lucas found the Han Solo that he was looking for.

The 1977 film went on to earn critical acclaim and worldwide fame, and even today, it stands at a rating of 8.6/10 on IMDb and a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope is available to stream on Disney+ (USA).
