Hubris is the downfall of many a great man. They say that pride goes before a fall, and Doctor Doom is so very proud of his accomplishments. The damnable thing is that he often is as good as he thinks he is. However, despite standing alone in a preview of One World Under Doom , the Ruler of Latveria is not too proud to reference the words of a colleague, albeit his MCU counterpart.

The previous chapter of One World Under Doom ended with the dread Dormammu testing the cosmic barricades protecting Earth. To his surprise, he found that Doctor Doom had allowed many of the protective spells regularly replaced by Doctor Strange to fade away. One World Under Doom by Ryan North and R.B. Silva opens with the opening salvo of Dormammu’s invasion of Earth. This leaves the Sorcerer Supreme standing alone to defend his world. However, he seems far from unprepared for what promises to be the fight of a lifetime.

Four pages from One World Under Doom may be viewed below.

Unlike Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom does not bargain

After revealing himself and banishing an illusionary duplicate, Doctor Doom literally lays the “smakk” down on Dormammu. He also declares that he “did not come to bargain.” MCU fans will recognize this as a nod to the oft repeated line that Stephen Strange said in the Doctor Strange film; “Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain.”

Beyond being a clever continuity nod to the MCU fans, this line lays bare the difference between Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange as Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange, for all his power and boldness, is acutely aware of his limits and avoids direct conflict when possible. By contrast, Doom relishes a fight and will risk the world for the sake of his image and the glory of besting Dormammu alone.

One World Under Doom arrives in comic shops everywhere on May 14, 2025.
