As Thunderbolts* approaches its May release, fans are wondering about its box office prediction and how much money the film is expected to make. The movie is poised to offer a breath of fresh air for the MCU as its story revolves around a group of antiheroes instead of the traditional superheroes.

So will Thunderbolts* flop or succeed at the box office?

How much is Thunderbolts* predicted to make at the box office?

Thunderbolts* is predicted to make somewhere between $65 to $85 million on opening wekeend.

This estimate comes from Box Office Pro. The figure is lower than the domestic opening weekend figure of February’s Captain America: Brave New World, which was $88 million. Brave New World eventually grossed $412 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, Box Office Theory also posits a similar figure of $67-$70+ million. They have estimated a 3-day low-end opening of $67 million and a high-end opening of $82 million, with a pinpoint of $76 million.

Will Thunderbolts* flop or succeed?

It remains to be seen as to whether Thunderbolts* will flop or succeed.

Thunderbolts* will be released in a competitive month, May, which will also see the release of other big titles like Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Lilo & Stitch, and Karate Kid Legends.

However, the presence of fan-favorite MCU characters, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, should somewhat help the film’s box office chances. In addition, the highly-anticipated introduction of MCU’s take on Sentry (played by Lewis Pullman) should also further bolster the chances.

However, on the flip side, both these characters were supporting players in previous MCU installments alongside the other main characters — David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, and Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost.

As such, they don’t have the star power expected from the likes of Iron Man or Spider-Man, which could make their box office journey to break even, let alone make billions, significantly difficult.

Thunderbolts* bursts into theaters on May 2, 2025.
