President Bola Tinubu is currently holding the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja.
Naija News reports that dignitaries, including the Diplomatic Corps, have arrived at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the venue of the meeting.
The meeting will consider the financing of the standby force against terrorism and an unconstitutional change of government.
Also important to the Authority is ensuring the regional body does not disintegrate, as Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have yet to return to ECOWAS following the lifting of the ban on them
Sharing footage from the ongoing meeting, Special Assistant to President Tinubu on social media, Olusegun Dada wrote, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Chairman of @ecowas_cedeao
hosts the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja.”
The meeting, which began at 1 pm, would likely see the West African leaders announce a new chair to steer the affairs of the bloc for the next one year.
However, there are indications that leaders may extend Tinubu’s tenure to give him time to possibly win back Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso into the bloc.
