5 MCU and DCU Directors Who Are More Influential Than Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder certainly has a recognizable visual style. His dark, mythological aesthetic in Man of Steel and other DCEU movies defined a distinct era of DC films. One can’t deny his influence, but several other MCU and DCU directors had far more lasting impact than Snyder did.

They might not have a dedicated fanbase or subreddit, but most of them managed to change the system itself! From laying the foundation to proving that weird characters can be a part of global blockbusters, let’s look at the five directors who didn’t just follow trends, but created them!

5. Sam Raimi

Sam Raimi became an MCU director after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But even before he joined the franchise, he had a profound impact on superhero cinema with his Spider-Man trilogy. He made the character a huge commercial hit, and now the MCU builds on that momentum with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies.

4. Joss Whedon

Many of us might remember him for ruining the Justice League movie, but he’s the first director who brought multiple major MCU characters together on the big screen. He helmed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, and proved that the saga can deliver large-scale storytelling with multiple heroes!

3. Jon Favreau

Jon Favreau’s influence on today’s superhero blockbusters is massive because, with Iron Man, he didn’t just make a movie, but launched the entire MCU. Moreover, he was the one who fought to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, as revealed in an interview with the Texas radio station (via Cinema Blend).

It was my job as a director to show that it was the best choice creatively…and now the Marvel Universe is the biggest franchise in film history.

Favreau set the tone for the MCU and shaped the way it would tell its stories in later films. Beyond directing, he also served as an executive producer in two Avengers films! So, without his early work, the superhero-centered cinematic powerhouse that we know today might have never existed!

2. James Gunn

James Gunn might be the most important creative in superhero cinema today, having successfully led both Marvel and DC franchises. He made his mark with Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequels, and showed us that superhero films can be successful even with lesser-known characters!

Now he’s become the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, exercising creative control over the rebooted DCU. So far, Peacemaker and Superman have done well under his reign, and the upcoming projects look promising as well!

1. The Russo Brothers

The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe Russo, directed four MCU films! One of them includes Avengers: Endgame, which became a milestone in superhero cinema. Their movies earned Marvel billions of dollars and changed how studios approach large-scale cinema. They’re even returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday, which underscores their overwhelming impact on the genre.

While Zack Snyder has a powerful visual identity and a loyal fanbase, these five directors redefined superhero cinema. Their world-building, ensemble storytelling, and more added to the industry model, and that’s certainly more than stylistic impact!
