On May 20, 2004, one of the greatest anime by Shinichiro Watanabe, Samurai Champloo, was released. This anime was really creative for the time, rivaling even the previous success of Watanabe: Cowboy Bebop. Rather than adhering to traditional historical drama tropes, this anime did many unique things, such as introducing hip hop music to the fights.

Let’s dive into the plot details of this masterpiece, along with how Shinichiro Watanabe actually reshaped the genre with his creativity.

What Is Samurai Champloo About?

The plot of this anime was very straightforward. It is basically a road trip story set during a slightly different version of Japan’s Edo period. The story centers on three main characters, who have come together because of their circumstances. Fuu, who is a young and determined girl, saves the two skilled swordsmen from execution. The reason for execution? Both of them killed the local magistrate’s son.

The swordsmen in question are Mugen, who is a vagabond with a breakdance-like fighting style, and Jin, a very traditional ronin. What’s interesting is that both are completely opposite. Fuu then hires them both as her bodyguards as she goes on her journey to find a samurai who smells like sunflowers. However, during this quest, she has to make sure they both don’t kill each other. In fact, fans still argue about who would win.

This anime is episodic in nature. As all three main characters travel across Japan, they encounter various important characters, local disputes, and bizarre situations. Every episode has its own self-contained story with an overarching plot. This is exactly the style of Watanabe, as a similar story structure was in Cowboy Bebop as well.

How Shinichiro Watanabe Mixed Hip Hop and Samurai

One of the most unique things about this anime is the fact that Watanabe mixed the historical Japan setting with the subtle themes of hip-hop – two things that never came together in real life. In real life, the Edo period was known for strict social hierarchies and isolationism.

Watanabe actively disrupted this historical reality by injecting graffiti art, beatboxing, and urban attitudes more common in the modern world into the environment. This resulted in Samurai Champloo, his best work after Cowboy Bebop.

The soundtrack, produced by influential artists like Nujabes and Fat Jon, relies on low-fidelity beats rather than traditional Japanese music heard in most historical anime. Mugen’s fighting style is explicitly stated to be like breakdancing.

Watanabe treated history as a flexible canvas rather than a rulebook and proved that contrasting cultural elements could be fused to create an original theme that appealed to traditionalists and a completely new wave of viewers.

Samurai Champloo Remains One of the Greatest Action Comedy Anime

A lot of modern anime try to target certain demographics to the point of fault. Modern anime are either designed to be mostly action or straightforward gag comedies. The intersection of both genres is rare to see, especially with the level of quality that Samurai Champloo had.

The action in the anime is fluid and choreographed to perfection while still carrying actual stakes in the story. The violence is often intense, yet the comedy hits just as hard in the anime.

The humor is not derived from breaking the fourth wall or utilizing exaggerated facial expressions, which are common crutches in modern anime. Instead, the comedy is the outcome of character dynamics and the absurdity of situations that the characters find themselves in, giving the entire story a cinematic feel.

Even after two decades, this unique hybrid of amazing action and comedy stands as one of the greatest. In fact, not even Watanabe’s modern work could capture the essence of this masterpiece.

How many episodes does the anime have?

The anime consists of 26 episodes.

Is Samurai Champloo based on a manga?

No. It is an original animation directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and produced by the studio Manglobe.

What happened to the animation studio that produced the series?

Manglobe, the animation studio behind classics like Samurai Champloo, filed for bankruptcy on September 29, 2015, and shut down entirely.
