20 Storylines I Want To See In House of the Dragon Season 3

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoiler Warning for George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood

House of the Dragon is moving deeper into the bloody civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, and with Season 3 on the horizon, I am looking forward to seeing some of the best storylines from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

From massive dragon battles to major characters’ internal struggles, no arc is too small to explore in the prequel series. The upcoming installment now has the opportunity to dive into darker, more complex narratives that I haven’t seen in the past two seasons. Here are 20 compelling directions that could elevate the show beyond spectacle into unforgettable drama.

1. Battle of the Gullet: One of Westeros’ Bloodiest Naval Conflicts

The Velaryon Fleet in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

The Battle of the Gullet is one of the bloodiest and most strategically important naval conflicts during the Dance of the Dragons. Taking place in the narrow sea passage known as the Gullet, the Velaryon fleet received a surprise attack from the Triarchy ships, which were hired by the Greens.

I already know that the series will open with this sequence, and I cannot stress the importance of this storyline enough. Not only was this a huge blow to the Blacks after losing Prince Jacaerys and Vermax, but it also cost the Velaryon fleet almost a third of its strength. The Greens also suffered losses and ultimately failed to achieve their objective of breaking the Velaryon fleet’s blockade along the eastern coasts of Westeros.

This storyline is expected to deliver one of the most visually striking scenes in the show, particularly the large-scale naval combat and dragon aerial battles, along with one of its most emotionally devastating moments in the death of Jace and his dragon.

2. The Debut of Daeron Targaryen & Tessarion The Blue Queen

Tessarion in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

We are finally seeing Daeron Targaryen in Season 3, thanks to Alicent’s mention of her youngest son in the previous installment and the appearance of Tessarion in the official teaser, which strongly confirms his introduction. The absence of the character has worried many fans, especially since he plays a huge role during the Dance of the Dragons.

With Daeron expected to debut in the upcoming season, I need to know what he was up to during this period. Obviously, he was in Oldtown and was serving as a cupbearer and squire to Lord Ormund Hightower, Alicent’s cousin.

While this lengthy delay in his arrival has frustrated me a bit, I hope the show will ultimately make his presence more impactful and his storyline woven directly into the conflict, so that the long wait will be truly worth it.

3. The March of Ormund Hightower Leading the Forces of The Reach

James Norton in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Ormund Hightower is a new character who will be introduced in the spinoff. He is the nephew of Ser Otto Hightower, and he will be responsible for leading the Reach forces during the civil war. We are talking about a massive host here, showing just how powerful the Green Realm is.

His storyline largely revolves around his loyalty to the Greens and his involvement in some of the most important battles during the Dance of the Dragons, such as the Battle of the Honeywine, the Sack of Bitterbridge, and the First Battle of Tumbleton.

4. Battle of the Honeywine: A Significant Victory For The Greens

The Hightower host in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

The Battle of the Honeywine is one of the major early land battles in the Dance of the Dragons, and it stands out as a defining win for the Greens. Just as when Ormund Hightower’s force was caught between two armies and his lines were starting to crumble, Daeron and Tessarion came to the rescue.

This is a storyline I need to see in Season 3, especially as it would allow us to witness Daeron being hailed as a hero and receiving his knighthood from Lord Ormund, earning him the title Daeron the Daring.

5. The Fishfeed As The Bloodiest Land Battle During the Civil War

The Gods Eye by Sergey Glushakov / Credits: Fantasy Flight Games

The Battle by the Lakeshore, better known as the Fishfeed, is often remembered as the bloodiest single ground engagement of the civil war after the Lannister host is cornered against the shores of the Gods Eye by a relentless vanguard of Northmen and Rivermen. This event earned its infamous name after the bodies of thousands of soldiers were fed to the lake’s fish.

Apart from the gruesome visual of this event, I also need this storyline in Season 3 because it demonstrates the sheer brutality of the Winter Wolves, the elite Stark warriors supporting the Blacks.

6. Impact of Jacaerys’ Death & Loss of An Heir on Rhaenyra’s Sanity

Harry Collett in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Jace’s death, as well as Vermax’s, is a significant loss for the Blacks. Rhaenyra loses her most capable heir and closest political ally, which I know would create instability to her claim and the future of her rule. Not only was this a political blow, but it was also more of a personal tragedy as a mother.

The demise of her son is expected to impact her next actions heavily. I have already caught a glimpse of her grief in the recent trailer, which would soon turn into anger and paranoia. This storyline needs to be explored in the series as it marks the point where her leadership begins to fracture.

7. Rhaenyra Targaryen Finally Seizes King’s Landing From The Greens

Emma D’Arcy in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

After the death of her son, Rhaenyra finally uses her dragon to seize the defenseless King’s Landing. I’m not sure how this will play out in the show since the story has been modified significantly, but I’m still expecting to see a determined and vengeful Rhaenyra.

I also need to see the City Watch displaying their unwavering loyalty to Daemon, Luthor Largent killing Gwayne Hightower, and opening the gates for the Blacks’ army.

This storyline will most likely explore the Black queen’s capture of the capital, as well as the punishment she hands out. Lord Otto Hightower and Lord Jasper Wylde will be executed for treason. Ser Tyland Lannister will be tortured for information, and Grand Maester Orwyle will be locked in the black cells.

8. Alicent Hightower In Chains & Kept Prisoner In the Red Keep

Olivia Cooke in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Seeing King’s Landing fall under Rhaenyra’s command, Alicent orders her forces to surrender. She and her daughter, Princess Helaena Targaryen, were then held as captives in the Red Keep, where she was forced to watch her rival occupy the seat of power and dismantle the Hightower influence piece by piece.

This storyline needs to be highlighted in Season 3 because it creates a psychological drama that mirrors the two childhood best friends’ bond, which becomes twisted by decades of betrayal and grief. Alicent remaining alive but powerless makes a good visual representation of the mess that their families have made.

9. Rhaenyra Sitting on The Iron Throne & Ruling Under Pressure

Emma D’Arcy in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Rhaenyra might have finally achieved what she has wanted all along, but her reign in the capital is far from triumphant. Rather than peace, Rhaenyra inherits a city on the brink of collapse. While it should have symbolized her victory, it became the source of her frustration and paranoia.

In fact, according to Septon Eustace, who supported Aegon II, the queen allegedly cut herself upon the throne, as if it had rejected her. The early days of Rhaenyra’s rule brought relief to the population, but as days went by, more and more executions were happening, and taxes continued to increase. Because of these, the people started hating her.

10. Daemon’s Inner Conflict On Ambition Versus Loyalty

Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Daemon has a very exciting arc this Season 3, especially if the show will fully explore the side of him that it has been building over the past two installments. Following his haunting visions at Harrenhal, Daemon’s upcoming arc will likely center on the friction between his lifelong desire for the crown and his realization of the prophecy.

He may have publicly knelt to Rhaenyra, but the capture of King’s Landing will put his resolve to the test when he walks the halls of power again. I know the queen already had her suspicions, but seeing that her future reign will be tainted with instability, I need to see how Daemon would react to this.

11. Arrival of The Winter Wolves, Cregan Stark’s Promised Northmen

Tom Taylor in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Perhaps one of the most highly anticipated scenes in Season 3, the arrival of the Winter Wolves is one of the most compelling Northern contributions to the Dance of the Dragons. It reflects House Stark’s promise to support Rhaenyra, with Cregan Stark sending out warriors after swearing allegiance to the Blacks through the Pact of Ice and Fire.

We are not expecting typical soldiers here but older Northern men, seasoned fighters who expect to die in battle rather than survive the coming winter. This storyline holds a symbolic representation of how the North honors its oath, even in a distant southern war that offers them little direct gain. But really, I just need to see more of House Stark in the show!

12. Rhaena Targaryen Ultimately Claiming Sheepstealer

Sheepstealer in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Season 2 teased Rhaena Targaryen potentially bonding with Sheepstealer. This didn’t happen in the book because the beast is ridden by Nettles, a character who doesn’t exist in the show. It seems like the spinoff is going in for Rhaena finally claiming the wild dragon.

The character hasn’t been in a lot of scenes across two seasons. More often than not, she is overshadowed by other members of her family. She also spent much of her early life without a dragon, which places her on the margins of a dynasty built on fire and blood. Her eventual bonding with Sheepstealer will not only mark a milestone in her life but will also contribute to the firepower of the Blacks.

13. The Red Kraken: The Rise of Dalton Greyjoy & The Ironborn

Iron Islands in Game of Thrones / Credits: HBO

We haven’t seen a lot of the Ironborn in House of the Dragon, so this is a great way to introduce them in the spinoff through Dalton Greyjoy. Known as the Red Kraken, his storyline will portray a savage and opportunistic wildcard who cares more for blood and salt than the Iron Throne. Initially offered the office of Master of Ships by the Greens, he chose Rhaenyra’s more appealing bargain.

This event is essential for Season 3 because it expands the conflict on a more horrific scale. By showing Rhaenyra sanctioning the Red Kraken’s pillaging of the coasts of the westerlands, it will display the moral complexity of her character and the lengths she would go to win this war.

14. Ser Criston Cole’s Death At The Butcher’s Ball

Fabien Frankel in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

A highly anticipated event, the Butcher’s Ball marks the end of Criston Cole’s journey in the show. Initially loved by fans, the character became the most hated persona due to his bitterness towards Rhaenyra and his convincing of Aegon II to claim the Iron Throne, for which he earned the moniker Kingmaker.

Throughout the last two seasons, Criston has been a staunch supporter of the Greens, and his death during this battle marks a significant win for the Blacks. With the knight finally gone, the Greens lost both their Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and the Hand of the King.

15. First Battle of Tumbleton, or The Beginning of Betrayals

A still from House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

The First Battle of Tumbleton is a huge event in the Dance of the Dragons as it introduces the betrayal of the two dragonseeds: Hugh Hammer and Ulf White. The newly minted dragonriders defect from Rhaenyra’s side to the Greens, using their mounts to turn the tide and destroy their former allies.

This is a storyline that cannot be ignored in Season 3, as what should have been a victory for the Blacks became a catastrophic defeat. This demonstrates exactly how power changes a person, and it’s also a great way to mirror Jace’s previous rant about the possibility of dragonseeds wanting to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

16. The Sack of Bitterbridge: Daeron Targaryen’s Wrath Unleashed

Tessarion in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

I’m not certain if this storyline will ever happen in House of the Dragon since Prince Maelor was deliberately excluded from the cast. Nonetheless, I’m still adding it to the list since it showed the horrors of the civil war and the fury of Daeron at the murder of his nephew.

Upon learning of the brutal killing of the young prince, Daeron led a devastating assault on the town, unleashing fire and destruction in retaliation. This scene marks a crucial point in Daeron’s character. Previously seen as the gentlest of his brothers, his actions at Bitterbridge reveal how grief and anger can push even the kindest figures into brutality.

17. The Peril of The Dragonseeds: Hugh Hammer & Ulf White’s Treachery

It’s a shame that the two dragonseeds who impressed us during the Red Sowing would turn against the Blacks, but that’s a common occurrence in war. After what Hugh Hammer and Ulf White did during the First Battle of Tumbleton, they will be remembered in history as the Two Betrayers.

This action significantly affected how the Blacks, particularly Rhaenyra, perceive the dragonseeds. Their betrayal became the trigger for the queen’s descent into paranoia, leading her to question the loyalty of all Targaryen bastards, including Addam of Hull.

18. Addam of Hull Proving His Loyalty Amid Distrust of Dragonseeds

Clinton Liberty and Seasmoke in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Addam of Hull’s action will serve as the moral heart of the dragonseed arc, depicting his desire to prove that loyalty is defined by character. While this is expected to happen during the Second Battle of Tumbleton, an event most likely occurring in Season 4, it will be the biggest milestone in Addam’s life as a dragonrider.

After the treachery of the Two Betrayers, several members of Rhaenyra’s council began doubting Addam’s loyalty. I need to see this storyline in the upcoming season because not only will it create tension among the Blacks, but it will also increase the queen’s distrust of her own allies.

19. The Slow Recovery & Revenge Plotting of King Aegon II

In the final moments of Season 2, we saw Lord Larys smuggling Aegon II out of King’s Landing. Because he’s not yet fully recovered, the injured king will spend most of the time hiding, disguising himself as one of the smallfolk, and eventually arriving at Dragonstone.

The latest trailer for Season 3 teased Aegon’s plan to kill Aemond after what he did to him during the Battle at Rook’s Rest. I need to see how this will play out, how he’s going to exact revenge on his brother, and how this will impact the Greens’ campaign.

20. King Aegon II Finally Seizes Dragonstone From The Blacks

Aegon’s eventual capture of Dragonstone, the ancestral seat of the Targaryens, marks the beginning of Rhaenyra’s downfall. After escaping King’s Landing, he hid on Dragonstone and convinced several Blacks to defect to the Greens and help him seize the island.

This storyline that Season 3 needs to include will also witness a clash between Aegon and Baela Targaryen, both mounted on their dragons Sunfyre and Moondancer. The intense aerial battle will leave both of them severely injured, with Baela’s dragon succumbing to death.
