10 Years and $405M Later, Makoto Shinkai’s 107 Minute Anime Masterpiece Returns to Theaters Today

10 Years and $405M Later, Makoto Shinkai’s 107-Minute Anime Masterpiece Returns to Theaters Today

Spread the love

Makoto Shinkai’s magnum opus, Your Name, is finally coming back to the cinema today, on 14th August, 2026. Furthermore, it’s not a standard release; for the 10th anniversary, the production has prepared a special 4k remastered version of this anime movie.

If you’re one of the long-term fans of this story, you know just how good the visuals of this movie are going to look on the big screen, especially in 4k. However, the movie is only getting a re-release in Canada and North America (as per the official GKIDS website). Here is everything you need to know.

How to Book Tickets for Your Name in North America?

The simplest and best way to book the tickets is through the GKIDS page for Your Name. There, you can find multiple options. You can go to the “GET TICKETS” option, where GKIDS will ask you for your region. Simply enter your local ZIP code or postal code to view available showtimes and book tickets. This process will be the same for both the United States and Canada.

However, if you somehow miss the window of the release, or simply cannot get the tickets, worry not, as there is a new Blu-ray release for the movie as well. You can pre-order it right now from the same page.

Why Your Name is Still The Benchmark of Anime Movies 8 Years Later

A full decade years since its 2016 release, Your Name remains the film every new anime movie gets measured against, and it’s not just nostalgia keeping it there. Makoto Shinkai took a trope that many romance fans are familiar with –  teenagers swapping bodies. He then turned it into a story about time, memory, and connection across a disaster that hasn’t happened yet.

The mechanics are simple enough to explain in a sentence, but the emotional payoff literally sneaks up on you. Furthermore, CoMix Wave Films’ backgrounds- the comet streaking across a hyperreal Tokyo skyline, the light hitting Itomori’s lake- set a new baseline for what a theatrical anime film could look like. And because of that, Your Name is not just one of the best modern anime movies, but is one of the best animated movies of all time as well.

Visuals and story aren’t all this movie excelled in, as the music in this movie created a benchmark of its own. “Zenzenzense” and “Sparkle” by RADWIMPS are still instantly recognizable outside anime fandom entirely, which is rare for a Japanese film soundtrack to achieve globally.

Your Name grossed over $350 million worldwide (as per Box Office Mojo) and became the highest-grossing anime film at the time, opening doors for global theatrical runs of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and Shinkai’s own subsequent films such as Suzume. Every box-office comparison since 2016 still uses it as the reference point.

Have you booked your tickets? Let us know in the comments.

Your Name is streaming on HBO Max.
