“You can criticize the government, but do it with fairness” – Tinubu sends message to Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned Nigerians about the dangers of misinformation on social media, emphasizing that while digital platforms empower citizens, they can also threaten truth, national unity, and democratic values.

Speaking at the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC 2025) at the State House Conference Centre, Tinubu highlighted the role social media has played in making every citizen a potential publisher.

“Social media has made every citizen a potential publisher. This has benefits, but it also increases the speed and scale of misinformation. You can criticize the government, but do so with knowledge and fairness,” he said.

The President warned that the unchecked spread of false information makes it increasingly difficult to separate facts from propaganda, which can destabilize the country and harm its international reputation.

He also urged media professionals to uphold integrity and discipline, stressing:

“Your institution must build a nation of credibility and integrity that the world can respect. Freedom of expression must strengthen governance, not sabotage it.”

Describing the digital age as one that has “democratized information but weaponized ignorance,” Tinubu reminded both citizens and media houses that responsible reporting and fact-checking are essential to national cohesion.

His remarks serve as a reminder that while social media has made information more accessible than ever, the power to publish comes with responsibility. Truth and fairness must take priority to safeguard Nigeria’s unity and democratic values.
