Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has shared some new insights about Wonder Man that should get fans excited for the next MCU show.

Abdul-Mateen II will play Simon Williams in Marvel Television’s Wonder Man, a new series coming to Disney+ in January. The show is created by Andrew Guest and Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton.

What did Yahya Abdul-Mateen II say about Wonder Man?

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Abdul-Mateen II said that Wonder Man will be something that “tonally feels much different than really any other Marvel show, or any other films.” He continued, “We’re doing something that’s fresh, and a bit tongue-in-cheek, a bit self-aware.

“…The show is self-aware, without looking directly into the camera. here’ll be commentary about superhero fatigue and things like that, but to me, it’s just dressing. That’s not really the aim of the show. The focus of the show is about an actor’s journey. It’s about a journey of friendship.”

Ben Kingsley will be reprising his role as Trevor Slattery in the Marvel show, while Arian Moayed also returns as the Department of Damage Control’s P. Cleary. The cast further includes X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Olivia Thirlby, and Byron Bowers. There will be eight episodes in total, with those episodes being directed by Cretton, James Ponsoldt, Tiffany Johnson, and Steaa Meghie.

The synopsis for Wonder Man reads, “Aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams is struggling to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery, an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film Wonder Man. These two actors at opposite ends of their careers doggedly pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.”

Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man premieres on Disney+ on January 27, 2026.
